Too many horses not enough toom
  • How do you guys do it? I am breeding all my mares. Evweyone says sell only minimal bc u need your foals esp the spayed and gelded ones to make u show money. Well I can't keep enough barns. I buy a barn and then it's full of foals and then some. I go through and sell then plainer ones but I still have tons of flashy ones that are too pretty to sell? Its getting hard to keep buying 15 and 30 stall barns......
  • I can take some foal , I've got 2 more barns left
  • Can you PT test foals? I auction anything altered below 10 for the first generation, and even after that I keep it sparse. I save up for 210 stall barns, but I do a lot of auctioning.
  • I have sent you a little help for the stall shortage. I hope it helps relieve the population pressure for at least one season.

  • I end up auctioning a lot. Sometimes it's tough, but you can't always keep every horse.

  • I've also sent you a little toward your next barn. How is your show bonus going?
  • RoseFlute, what if the foal doesn't get altered by free testing? Do you have a lenient score for them before altering to get the better show potential? **Edit: Altered for the training benefits, not the better show potential.

It seems that building the show bonus is a common goal because that's what I'm working on too. I have a lot of pasture foals that originally passed free testing however I knew I wouldn't use them as breeding stock so I altered them. The few that I could spare to PT test score between 9.5-10.3 and I've kept them all. Until now...my barns can't keep up now that I have second generation mares producing foals and I'm wondering if I should auction foals that are PT tested and scored under 10.
  • I was starting to PT score but my money was going down alot fast. Bc I hadn't done much till now. So it was same deal. PT score and go down in cash fast or wait. So do the higher PT scores always show better?
  • Don't forget that the foals PT is what is used to calculate the mares paper level in future years. If you yum the foal it won't count.

  • So do the higher PT scores always show better?

They start off from a higher point than the others, so they are ahead of the game when it comes to training.

  • They train faster--add more points to their show score overall faster than a lower PT horse. This means they advance up the levels faster and are more likely to level off at a higher show class (with more prize money and points up for grabs!). The difference between a 9.5 and a 10 may only be an extra point/month, but the difference between a 9.5 and a 12.5 would be more significant. That's why upper gen show ponies are more desirable than foundations/gen2s.

  • I didn't realize that the difference between 9.5 and 10 would be so small. I can definitely see the appeal of having upper generation show stock now.
  • Hidden--if you have the barn space and hbs, I would highly recommend that you see about auctioning some of your lower PT show ponies and replacing them with upper gen young stock. I know Abbey Road sometimes auctions upper generation culled foals. Alternatively I can make you a deal on some of the gen 6-9 foals I altered last night. Also check the Available to Adopt tattoo...I know I have horses with several hundred points waiting to be adopted.
  • Out of the foals left by free testing, I alter/auction anything below 9.5. at the second generation, and anything below 10 at the third generation. :) I know a player who starts at 10 for second generations. Anything you won't use is fair game, too. I also always make a note on the dam's page of what score foals got if they're not good enough to keep, so that when I'm mare culling, I can see how she's doing a little more accurately. :)

  • Thank you for your help, RoseFlute. It looks like I just need to be patient enough for my young show stock to grow older and earn more points. :)

I also appreciate reading your helpful hints Cheers. I need to go look at some of those upper generation show stock.
  • Cheers thanks. I will prob take you up on that. I am working through my horses. I got another stable with some of wonderful donated money. But now have 9k left till I can sell some. So more pt scores are gonna have to wait. The 2nd Gen ones I did test were hitting atound 9.7 alot
  • rits--I am slowly bringing up my cull PTs. My gen 2 cutoff was 9.5 and its up to 9.8 now...but I make all sorts of exceptions since PT doesn't reflect breeding ability. Foals that are best pasture foals get to stay regardless of their PT. Colts aren't snipped for PT until I'm done papering and comparing--I've had top colts with abysmal PTs! Fillies with rare genes also slip through.

But I'm also starting to use AFPT to cull mares...thus the insane foundation mare cull I have on at the moment!

  • Also. On the available to adopt. I searched the for sale ones with that tattoo and none came up. I have been searching for a while. Am I doing something wrong? I am finally getting a decent feel for the show bonus and I am stalking for sale horses and auctions. But I feel bad bidding against others I know have the same goals I do:-) lol
  • Anyone interested in young upper gen show ponies, shoot me a private message. 1k each, which covers my cost.
  • Hidden--available to adopt ponies aren't for sale. Just search in general and they should come up.
  • How do u adopt them then?
  • Private message whoever owns them.
  • I keep everything. I have a bonus of 1.7 mill ;)

  • Wow. Maribo how did you do it?
  • I keep everything. lol :P The only ones I put through auction is any foundations I dont want that have been freshly created. If they have had a foal by me they go in a show barn.

I have 7339 horses right now, and only 414 are mares of breeding age. I have more than 800 foals from this year, but I go through each and every foal and if the PT isn't where I want it, I snip the dam (but never foals). Every snipped horse goes into a showing barn (no matter how old they are when snipped) untill they age out of the game. My highest pointed horse only has 1500 points, and they have all been in auto show barns, so they are all showing. So you need to have alot more show ponies than breeders if you want to keep on the plus side.

  • I also keep most of my horses as show horses. I show all of my horses, even horses for breeding. I also wait to geld, and spay, until my horses are a little older. I test breed pretty much all my horses before gelding or spaying, but show them up until that time. They still get points for showing, even if they are not snipped. It may just not be as much. My show bonus is always around 600k to 1mil. I would rather get the show bonus, more than pasture bonus for breeding. Like Maribo and a few others, my stable can support itself. But I usually buy barns each month for the show ponies. This is just the way I play, others play differently, and they do just as well in show bonus as I do. This way just works for me.

I have a few horses up for adoption for show horses. All my horses for adoption will only be 1 dollar. PM me if you are interested.
  • Maribo, wow! That is really encouraging to hear. Thanks for sharing.

I am so inspired. I finally made enough to purchase a 30 stall barn for more show ponies. :D
