What makes this girl so pale?
-
I picked up this girl in auction yesterday purely because of her odd coloring. She's chestnut tobiano, with no roan. What is causing the pale, washed out appearance?

She's 11yo, it's likely just normal appaloosa varnish roaning out the color. It's not the same gene as roan but has a similar effect, adding more and more white hairs progressively as they age.More power!

No, not all horses with appaloosa have varnish, just some. I find with the varnish horses it usually starts to really noticeably show by age 4-6, but if I’m paying attention, I might see it earlier. Appys are automatically re-rolled by the game (whether you want them to be or not!) at the start of each month.
Varnish is not shown to us mere mortals in the visible gene code, so there’s no easy way to tell when they are foals. -
Some foals will have a few little white speckles, smaller than snowflake (which is actually a variation of varnish), in their foal coat color.
-
They will all varnish to some extent actually.
