My mom always says don't spend money on online games because the game will one day go away and then so will all the money you spent on it. This seems to be the same with any perishable thing though. How much money have I spent on feeding goats and then the one I have been feeding the longest died on me... kinda goes with the territory. On the other note, love this game, and it is still going great, and although it is growing and needs more money, it is not turning solely into a money grab like other games that chased me away after a year or so. This has been 2 spectacular years on the game and I want to see it continue. I have spent some money on genes in the past, but now thunderstruck and ice 9 at a price that I technically can afford has me seeing stars! I'm telling myself that I will likely be forking over money like that for school dance formation uniforms this month anyway, so... but I am already forking over money that I originally hadn't budgeted. I also really don't need to be quite as stingy because I broke down and went back to applying for fasfa scholarships instead of trying to work to pay for college completely out of pocket. Would you guys say spending more because you have scholarships is ethical though? I need to figure out how much this dance uniform will cost exactly. Wait for me to put in my gene order on the last day. haha

I told myself I can't allow myself to be spending money if I couldn't find a spectacular horse to put it on. Well guess who popped up with an exceptional herd helper this morning.

I'd be adding dun, along with the thunder and ice, of coarse, as well as taking off frame and making him hom E, but he looks so much like the stud that won over my heart when I started, Wildly Generous, and he can throw 2 different varieties of bay dun once I ad the dun!

What do you guys think? How many of you guys have Ice 9 or Thunder? What do your ponies look like? All the decision. haha

I now have both. I won Ice 9 in January and just bought Thunderstruck - and I absolutely love them both! Before Mushroom, I had never spent money on this game. I finally broke down and did it, but my justification was - I really, really enjoy this game. Most people spend $15 within a couple of days at Starbucks. I don't care if it goes away someday, or if my life situation changes and I can no longer play - for now it is bringing me much joy! Thanks Ammit :x
Edit - also, yes, it is the same with any other perishable thing - which means everything. Exactly the same with every single thing you could spend your money on. Lol.

I've bought a bunch of genes and am thinking about it again, even though I've never bought anything for any other game, either. It's really about are the genes worth the money to you, and could the money be better spent. Obviously money can always be better spent than on something not food, or shelter, but hey, we need our morale. :P

Lol I came home from work and was texting my friend and told her that she should talk me out of buying genes because just the other week I was thinking the next time any blue genes came out I should grab one (not expecting it would happen this month lol)

She asked me will it make you happy?

Will pretty ponies make me happy?

She says well you gotta do it. When I said she’s terrible at talking people out of things. She replied that she only talks people out of things that are bad for them. So I’m off to find some studs on HJ1 to add axiom to (I already breed nexus over there and it has more disposable income to cover a new line)

When I was a teenager I saved for a 100$ dress. My mom just shook her head because she might have been able to spend 100s on books but a dress seemed frivolous to her. Eventually that dress stopped fitting and grew out of my sense of style and was donated. But I enjoyed it while I had it.

As long as I'm not going to starve or starve someone who depends on me I say spend that money on the things you enjoy.

I think he is gorgeous! And what you plan to add sounds wonderful.

Well, I’m not sure we are the best people to talk you out of genes, since we are all pixel pony addicts!

But I agree with what people have brought up. We spend a lot more on coffee or lunch out than we realize. Take that money you might spend in a week and put it towards your ponies! Long as it makes you happy and won’t take money away from something you absolutely must have (food, shelter, bills, etc) have a little splurge.

I agree with most of the things being said! I put money into the game, partly because I enjoy the game and partly because I always prefer it when I can financially support individuals who make fun things to do online. Especially in contrast to, say, paying one of the big companies who produce a gazillion versions of the 'match four' games, this feels very much like the online game version of 'shopping local.' And, entertainment budgets are designed to fund those parts of our lives that are frivolous, fun and make us happy without the promise of being important the next day *ahem: like going to see the newest rom com or dino movie at the theater.*

I also don't think it's unethical to budget entertainment into school budgeting - those mental breaks and enjoyment are important part of keeping sane during school. However, to play devil's advocate, it's worth keeping in mind that interest rates on FAFSA loans are not pleasant. I'd recommend being cautious if spending money on the game would change the amount you need to borrow, since you'll end up paying considerably more in the end with interest.

It is definitely not unethical to consider spending money on the game when you’re looking at scholarships. It IS stupid to take out a “pay day” loan to pay for genes.

If you’re looking at further education, one thing I can guarantee you is long hours of stress in front of your books or a computer. Having an extra outlet for that stress is helpful. Go for it!

I was planning to do a stallion with ice 4, 9 and thunderstruck for my ice herd (ice 5 and 13 on black based gray, black and grullo). But I just saw that freaking amazing Thunderstruck Hom Axiom on the Facebook page and am now considering splitting it into two stallions....ice for the ice pasture and an Acca Dacca boy for my Axiom pasture. Will depend what cool HHs come out I suspect (come on Storm Warning!)

I took the plunge and started spending here too, didn’t really have to cutback anywhere but I like rationalizing my spending. I actually didn’t buy coffee the week I bought mushroom.

Reflecting back on opportunity cost from my economics lectures, I’m now spending $7.50 a month on premium. The time savings from auto entry and auction vs me doing all that clicking is worth it.

Say over a month on basic I spend 5 hours clicking stuff (that’s 10 mins/day). Switching to premium drops my clicking down to only 1 hour. (2 mins/day)

I effectively spent that $7.50 to gain back 4 hours of my time. I wouldn’t work 4 hours for only $7.50 total, so it makes sense to pay $7.50 to free up those 4 hours. In my case that’s more time for relaxation and home upkeep. For you that could be be 4 hours at a summer job, or studying.

You can probably “find” your GMT project’s money if you trim somewhere else. See if you can hunt down free PDF versions of some of your classes books. Or if you were planning to get new copies look at buying used or renting instead.
