Where are all the tall drafts hiding?
-
So, I breed drafts, and, because I like drafts, I like BIG drafts. I notice that most of my creates seem to be about 15.2 or 15.3 hands! This is a little sad. There are some lovely 17 hand horses out there, but they seem be rare. Even the GMT lab seems to only let you go up to 16.2 on foundations.
Am I missing something? do we just have to wait to get lucky for those occasional tall horses?
Does anyone know wha the mean is in draft height? -
Foundation's max height is 16.2hh. You then have to breed up, is all.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable. -
The biggest a draft can get is 18hh or they wouldn't fit in the screen. Its just a matter of breeding the bigger drafts to bigger drafts and seeing what you get. Start with two parents that are 16.2 hh (Thats as big as a foundation can be) and see what you get and keep going. It's odd that you get smaller creates, make sure you are clicking Heavy and Horse or you will end up with cobs.

Hey there!
As already said, when it comes to drafts, you have to breed up. If your breeding purely for height I would start with the tallest foundation boys you can find and breed them to the tallest foundation mares in turn. Once you have some generation two foals and they are of breeding age you can search the boards to have it give you results of available breeding horses by height and choose the tallest from there to add to your lines. I myself breed for height in drafts and I have also found that some stallions, despite being a little smaller themselves, notoriously throw very tall foals haha! I have one stallion who is 16.3hh himself but he has given me multiple 17.3hh and 18hh foals. I'd be happy to help you out with some straws from some of my really big boys (have a few big 2G, 3G and 4G boys) if you'd like to get you started, just let me know ^^
I also have a couple of big extra Colts and fillies from my pasture breeding this season if your interested in those :)
This is my 16.3hh boy:
BV Leo 3G snf
and these are some of his very, very tall foals haha:
SA LeoPard 4G hetsnf
this foal will be 18hh
SA Cheetah 4G hetsnf
SA Leodaze 4G snf
and this filly from a 17hh stallion is 18hh herself

Ah - think you! that explains it. It will be fun breeding up.
But yeah - I have noticed that I generate a lot of 15.2 h horses, and I definitely check horse instead of pony! I think the random generator hates me.
Silver Aleki - thank you for your offer. I have out myself on a strict diet of saving money and showing horses this month, due to overspending on cool breeding horses. But next month I would be happy to buy some straws from your boy who throws big foals!Thanked by 1SilverAleki -
@WhiteMountain
It is fun to breed up and seeing all the different variations and how your lines change! Good luck with your goal and no worries at all, I def understand saving money haha. Feel free to let me know whenever your ready for a few straws. I sent you a little gift from a tall 2G boy just to help you out a little (long expiration date so you can hang onto it for a few seasons or until you find the right mare if need be) Good luck!Thanked by 1WhiteMountain -
Thank you! I look forward to using it. Made a spreadsheet of all my horses tonight... took waaaaay too much time.

If you ever want straws from any take a look in my barns (or live cover) let me know. I may have some youngsters I would be willing to sell when I have done my sorting. PM me if you like anything :) -
I have this guy I might be willing to part with if you like him or would use him:-
4G1715840
He is 17.3hh so nearly there :) -
My preferred height for all breeding stock is 17+. :)
That being said I am sitting with 16% of the herd at or above 17hh. I would like to see that get into the 30% range.ID# 24891
