I bred a few colts this go around and their liver dun is throwing me off. These are the two little fellas in question. Most of the ones I've seen are closer to the top one in color, but he looks nearly classic champagne to me lol. Just a bit darker than expected and I know he's only het dp.

This guy down here is throwing me off though. I wouldn't expect him to be so light. Can anyone explain why there's such a difference?

the only differnece i can see in their genetics is that one is homozygous AA and the other Aa, whether this would affect it or not i have no idea however i do know that there are multiple 'looks' for one colour so it could just be a different variation of the genes :)

Because they are chestnuts, the agouti genes "AA, Aa, etc" won't have any effect. What I think is going on here is that it's showing the variance between the different expressions. Some colours will come out looking all the same, but Dun is one of those that I've noticed that has some interesting variation between horses with the same genetics.

There are variations on base chestnuts to start with too, the varying dun literally highlights them.

So what would a Hom DP, Hom Sooty Liver Dun look like?

This is a Freaky friday dun, so hom dp, hom sooty. There'd probably still be a lot of variance as it is, but most FF that have dun are grullos, with 1 having Ice 14 (which lightens the coat in areas) and the other having nacre. I don't know of any other black livers with dun.

This liver red dun colt is I suspect hom DP as his face mask and legs are a lot darker than my other liver red duns

Here are all my liver red duns showing the wide variation they can have. There are some homozygous DP (Efficacious Dusk 3 on the first page for one) but most are het. The color of the points rather than the body is what I use to determine hom or het.

The red dun Freaky Friday guy is mine, and I had to reroll him a few times to get the darker color. He was actually a lighter shade like your second foal at first :)

Red liver dun is so hard to work out :) ChilliFireFarm has to genetically test all HHs because I can't tell if they are liver or not and I have looked at them a lot :D
