To Auction Or Not to Auction
  • I have a couple show horses scoring like this. Should I auction them or give them more time since they are only 2.

  • All the records I see are from May. I'd definitely keep showing.

  • You really can’t tell if a horse is going to be a good pretty much until it levels off.

All those shows were from May when it was a yearling so the horse was not in training so could not increase its score. All your seeing is a touch of inconsistency.

Lower PT horses will train slower and work their way up to higher levels stopping long enough to pick up a points along the way before they level off.

Higher pt horses train faster and sort of rocket through the lower levels and never really stick in one place long enough to be competitive so only pick up points here and there along the way. But they reach higher levels of competition and the classes and payouts are bigger so they earn most of their points once they level off

  • Adding that I never completely cull horses on here.

I’d rather take a month off breeding to let my show horses fill the bank so I can buy a new barn then toss them away for a measly 2500hbs.

My daily show bonus is up to 80k because of my practice of keeping all the things and on HJ1 I am selling off show stock in an attempt to keep my bonus under 300k. (An attempt because I went from 320k per night but as fast as I’m selling them off the ones I have left are chugging along and adding points to the bonus lol and I’ve sold a few hundred horses in the last month or so)

Back when I did cull to sell or auction I didn’t even look at a horse until it leveled off (roughly when the age and Pt reach the same number) and only culled the horses placing consistently at the bottom loosing me money.

Since then though the showing system has had an update so that only the last place horse doesn’t get points and the class doesn’t cost a fortune to enter and the points the horse does have add to the total for the show bonus.

So now unless they’ve sat in a pasture their whole life and don’t have any points they are still contributing (and even those pasture broods could pick up quite a few points if shown as long as they’ve been training)

The main point is train and show all your horses every week even if they aren’t placing well they are likely still adding to your overall total a little at a time.
  • I don't have the room to keep everything so I rum all foals through the two shows and keep the ones who end up with 1 or 2 points. Lol its actually kind of silly to do, but it makes me feel better. Then I throw them into a barn and leave them cook for a couple years and sort again when they're about 4 or 6. If they're not gaining points, they're gone. I've also purchased dozens of pointed creates to get a boost on my daily.

As I mentioned, kind of a flawed system but it does OK with me. Lol

  • I honestly never cull show horses....When going through my foals each season, I keep show horses with PTs of 10 and higher (mainly cause I just don't have the barn room to keep everyone, and honestly, most foals that are above G2 PT higher than 10 anyway so it's really just the G2 foals that get culled from this). Other than that I never even touch my show stock - they get shown twice weekly and sit in their barns earning me money until the day they die.
