Light top of tail
-
Hey guys!
Anybody able to tell me what's going on with this dude's tail? It's slightly lighter at the top.
I've refreshed a couple of times to see if it was a bug or something, but it's still the same. Any ideas what might cause it? Or is it just a random common something that I haven't come across yet?

Thanks so much guys! -
I think it's the Rabicano. Some of my rabi kids have grey streaks in their tails. Of course I can't find any now...but I swear some of them do!

Cheers is right. Light hairs at the top of the tail go along with the stripey white roany places along the body as an effect of Rabicano. See this entry in the Genetics Guide:

I actually think there are two things going on here. The fact that the whole top third or so of his tail is a shade lighter is because of the dun. I've noticed some dun horses have this effect. Here are some examples:

You can see some of the horses in this list (especially darker horses) have this effect.
Meanwhile, I believe the whitening of the base and underside of this horse's tail is due to very pronounced rabicano:

To my eye, your horse doesn't show very much rabicano in his tail (maybe a teeny bit at the very top), but those white stripes/flecks are definitely rabicano. -
Fun fact: Back when I was living the dream (working at a show/breeding barn) we called the rabicano markings 'skunk tails'. Not terribly flattering, but it was descriptive!

That's awesome. Thanks so much for the info guys! Very much appreciated.
