Does KP need roan to become visible?
-
I am starting to dabble in KP, but have a few questions. Does it need roan in the horse to be visible> Or will it add roan patches to a non-roan horse?
I assume it needs white patches (like tobiano) to be visible?
Is it recessive? Does it need to be homozygous to show up?
Thanks in advance! -
For KP to express, the horse must have a combination of four alleles.
They must be homozygous KP (that's two) and they must have two KIT mutations. Those can be any two, don't have to be roan, don't need to be homozygous, just any two KIT mutations plus the hom KP.Thanked by 1WhiteMountain -
kp, standing for kit promoter, is homozygous recessive. Not only does it need two copies to show up, but it also needs two kit genes. Tobiano and roan are the most favoured, since they're mostly safe with everything. It adds white clouds onto a horse, like this girl here shows:

Thank you - that answers my question perfectly!

On HJ1 I have a herd of KP horses and not one of them has roan lol I prefer it with w8, sb1 or sb2, or tobianoThanked by 1WhiteMountain

It does fine. A lot of mine are combinations of roan or tobiano, because it is generally safe to cross with other kit genes. I also have a good bit of W20. The hazy patch varies in size from horse to horse, from barely there to covering the whole animal. Here are some examples from my herd:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but one can also reroll a horse to change the kp patch, right? So if it's too small/you don't like the placing, you can try for a different expression.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

Yep. I just made a new tobiano splash grullo stud homo KP and you couldn’t even see a speck of haze. I rerolled him 3 times and he now has a medium sized patch over his shoulder and neckThanked by 1ObsidianKitsune
