Using genes in the name?
-
I'm curious about how you guys who name your horses by gene do it. I had a different system going but I think it would work better for me now to just have it all in the name. But, I can't seem to figure out a good way that isn't too long. So how do you do it?ID: 16853
-
For me, I put the important ones to myself at the front of the name
Lvr- Liver
Wtc- Watercolor
Nx- Nexus
Prl- Pearl
Mch- Macchiato
Na- Nacre
Ic- Ice
So just a little something that tells me if the horse has colors that matter to me for breeding. If the colors aren't ones mentioned above, then I don't label as such -
I use a letter system. One copy of a gene gets one letter, two copies two letters, and suspected carriers of gene that must be homozygous to show ( kit, Gulastra, snowflake) get a lower case letter. I mainly focus on naming patterns rather than base colors.
A=appaloosa
D= liver
G= Gulastra
H= splash
K= kit promoter
L= lwo
M= splash m
N= snowflake
O= Roan
P= plaid
S=Sabino
T= tobiano
W= white
-
(prefix - indicates gender and generation in 3 letters) (NX or IC) horse name or ID (Olw, Sa or Kp)
Server 1 - I have nexus and Kp.
Homo KP is uppercase het kp is lower case
Server 2 - I have Ice and Satin
Each copy of Satin gets an Sa at the end of the name (SaSa)
Those are the only 5 genes I label. The rest of them I can hazard a guess what the have if they are named but for me keeping the generational lines even matters more. -
I use the genetic symbols for what I'm interested in at the end of a horse's name. If you like loud colors and complicated genetics, yes, it can get awfully long, like this one:
2g 1APrimeGApDYS1MSpLF Bl
The genetic markers start at the A. I've kept track of the base color of Bay, the fact that she carries prl, her Dun, Sooty+, Sabino 1, Macchiato, Splash, Appaloosa, and Frame, plus that she's a 2g Blue.
Obviously, I could just drop some of those, and only track the important ones, like the rarer colors, LE genes, and potentially lethal combinations, but I don't mind much. I should make a more succinct system for the genes I have to call with certain letters so far, like any gene that starts with S. Satin, Sabino, Splash...Satin I just call s, but Sabino and Splash I have to differentiate by secondary letters. I dropped the p in Lp for Appy a while ago. -
So far my herd are labelled as follows
Generations are G2-onward. Foundations and show horses have no G in my herd.
If the gene presents these are notated in their names if they are breeding stock. Show/fixed I don't notate as to me there is no need.
SNF-Snowflake
KM-Kit M
NX-Nexus
MU-Mushroom
DP-Dense Phelomenin
PRL-Pearl
KP-Kit Promoter
GP-Gulastra Plume
W8 -White 8
W10-White 10
UE- Uneven
I# -Ice and whatever variation number it is
SA-Satin
If they don't present the gene i.e most hets it just gets notated in their public notesGod grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.

I usually only go it with genes I'm specifically trying to keep track of. (Recessive I'm trying to express, restricted, etc) this is what I do.
Kit promoter- kp
Snowflake- sn
Glustra plume- j
Nexus- n
Splash M- m -
I only keep track of the special genes.
KP, kp-hom or het Kit Promoter
S, s- hom or het snowflake
SA, sa-hom or het satin
NX, nx-hom or het nexus
T or TT for het or hom Thunderstruck
M or MM for het or hom Macchiato
W or WW for het or hom Watercolor
Ices I put the number they have
1, 8, 5, 14
Axioms I put Ax and whatever color(s) they have
AxBG, AxRR, AxG, etc. -
My system is similar to Rose’s.
Suffix based. Special first letters for the beginning of the name:
J = GP
D = DP
K = KP
Often doubled to indicate Hom.
Then
E/e = black/red based
A/w/t = bay/wild bay/brown
If a brown carrier, especially in my Agouti based lines, I will often note At or wt.
G = Gray
c = cream (2 for Hom)
p = pearl
Y = S+
Z = silver
C = champagne
D = dun (yes it means two things)
q = satin
Then we get into patterns
T = tobiano
r = roan
W = W1
t = W2
h = W3
e = W8
M = Kit M
s = Sabino 1
b = Sabino 2
n = W20
x = W10
S = Splash 1 2 and 3
m = Macchiato
L = Appaloosa
R = rabicano
O = Frame
B = Brindle
Q = Axiom
X = Nexus
I = any ice
P = watercolor
p = plaid
N = Nacre
Probably going to use u for mushroom.
All followed by a gen number if even Lined. No number if foundation or Bootstrap.
If I run out of room I try to keep base color and the most important other info — Lethal and risky genes, major line genes — in the mix. -
Mine is pretty similar to everyone else's. I do more of a combination of genes for a single goal than who has what genes though. I always put it at the beginning so when I'm in the pasture they will show up with similar group. 2G BTS is 2G "Big" "ThunderStruck" etc. If they have multiple combinations of my genes for example (SWS small wanted spot and SBB small black based), then I will usually just put the one more important to me. Sometimes I put both. It's very easy to add to pasture and move around in pasture as I have quite a few more mares than I will admit to.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

I only track genes that I breed for or that are potentially lethal. So for me that is DP and Prl at the front and patterns at the end. SF or hSF are at the end, followed by potentially lethal. I don't note base color or non lethal patterns.
**On my main account. -
Thanks everyone! So far, I've gathered a bit from everything that everyone has said and I think I have something that works for me. I am just doing a small letter for het and a capital letter for hom - a for Aa, A for AA ect, and nothing for hom recessive. I keep track of base color, gray, dun, roan, ect. and special genes. It's a little bit long but I don't mind.ID: 16853

At the moment, I'm in the process of reorganising my naming system. Right now it's prefix, gen, name, height, special genes. My prefix is CP for Chilton Park. For genes that need two copies to show, I use upper case for hom and lower case for het. Ponies that have any of the ices will have "Icy" in their names.
KP, kp - kit promoter
GP, gp - Gulastra plume
D - dense phelomine
X - nexus
SF, sf - snowflake
M - splash M
P - plaid
W - watercolour
N - nacre
Still trying to work out what I'm going to use for mushroom. I also want to start noting w3 and w10.
