How to make money?
  • Just wondering what the best way to make money is on this game. thanks!
  • Show horses! Geldings and spayed mares! All the pretty snipped ponies!

In all seriousness, show horses are the way to go. Some people recommend 3 show horses for every breeder, though that's a difficult goal with all the shinies floating around, lol.

I suggest dedicating at least half to two thirds of your barn space to gelded/spayed horses that will be earning you points, minimum. They will give you a nightly show bonus, and that's how you make money. Sure, every once in a while a nicely bred horse will net you a bit of extra pocket change, or a lucky create will win you the lottery, but the only steady income around here is show ponies.

On your "Member Home" page, you can keep track of how much you're making - it'll say how many total points you hold, and how much a night you're getting from that.
ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!

God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time.

  • I have 23 barns of show horses. I also show my studs and mares that I didn't put in the pasture. All of my horses have points, and the mares I don't breed anymore I keep for show.

  • I am new to the game, so I still create pointed horses. I have been using the strategy of selling snipped foals so I can use the money to create horses with more points. Does that make sense for now?

  • WhiteMountain, that's one of the intended extra benefits new players get...if you don't want to keep all those pointed ponies you can usually get a decent price for them.

  • I would not sell all the snipped ones, but rather keep the ones with the most points :) And create yearlings. They will earn you alot of cash through the years.

I have played HJ2 since it opened (my ID is 108 :P ), and have a pretty self sustaining stable, including GMTs (wich I use way too much). Right now I have 1705 intacts and 8875 show horses. I think I am at an all time high of intacts right now. Although I have not gone through this years foals yet, so alot of those will be snipped. I also have not checked my mares AFPT after this season and snipped the ones that are not good enough. 1705 is too big of a number for me, so I will need to go through my mares. I do my boys before every breeding season, and my mares after each breeding season.

  • So you know how we get the free barn with posting in the buddy chat... think of that one as breeder space for now, and be choosy about the clipped ones that fill up like half your primary barn.

Then you have room to pull your mares out for showing while after you've bred and gone through your foals. Only keep the ones that are better than their parents by the tests you can run for a couple generations til you start to get a feel for the game.
  • I think someone has already mentioned it, but I'll say it again, because it's important. Show all your intact horses that aren't in pastures. Keep on showing them regularly.

You can check out the public auction for horses that are about 10 and have some points already. Pick the ones that have the most. This will give a boost to your nightly showing bonus.
De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

  • omg maribo 1705? I can't keep up with 220......I would pass out.
  • I have 400 & 700 mares between the 2 servers. But I have a fairly well organized labelling system that works for me throughout my barns, pastures and horses so I could get through breeding all my mares within a day. Although on this server I have 3 rounds of mares that get 5-7 pasture bonus days each and then I finish the lined horses on the 3rd day.

My biggest money earners are my show horses tho. They bring in enough to buy 210 stall barns for the breeders and 1000 stall barns for themselves so between the 2 servers I have 2 & 5 full 1000 stall barns of show horses that their only job is to go to shows, earn points and bring home the money!

On my secondary account to make money I created as many horses with points as I could when I was below 20,000 points and sell them off adding 500hbs for every 100 points they hold. I had a running sales post I updated after every batch to keep it at the top of the forum without having 1000 sales posts. I filled my welcome pack barn with the highest point holders and auctioned off the leftovers in my primary barn then went back to creating more. When I had enough in the bank I bought extra barns to fill up. Now that I’m above 20k points I’m back to scouring the sales boards and auctions to buy the highest pointed horses I can for the cheapest price and sending the lowest point earners back to the auction so I continue to have space for new horses

  • lol shad0cat, that is just this server. I think I have more than that on HJ1 :P I have a very good working system. I.e. I never let myself breed before I have gone through every foal from last season (on both servers). That way I don't get swamped. I'm also very strict on who gets to stay intact. I have about 300 intact foals from this season, just by letting testing do their thing. I do -alot- of hand snipping too, and just shove the altered ones into a showing barn.

  • Lol Maribo I’m catching up with you! 9300 Horses total, 7000 show ponies and 2300 intacts (some of which are surrogate mares that are really show ponies). I still have some culling and selling to do this season...would like to get back down to 2000 intacts.

Like Maribo, my herd is pretty self sustaining, or at least it is when I remember to buy IVs regularly. I have a nightly show bonus of 250k.
  • I'm still working on getting my nightly to 2.5k. Now that I have a pocket of red/b babies coming of age I need to cull a lot more of my yellow mares for show horses.
