Started making horses from my HH today, and on the first one I got this one. Double luck, as she got DP and Rabicano!

Thing is, not sure if she has one DP gene or is homozygous. I'm figuring probably just one DP.

Is DP one of the hidden genes? If not, how do you find it? (we never got into the really shiney genes over on WHG :( )

Yeah, DP is one of the genes you can't test for. It makes the red coloring in horses darker.
I created and tested another horse, that ended up being StyS, then looked at the color difference between them. The SS horse looked to be the same shade as the StyS, so I'm figuring she only has 1 DP gene.

Confluence - The freaky friday rank special horses are homozygous for DP and you can create horses who are het for it they're just harder to spot lol. And then of course with those you can breed for it :)

Homozygous DP on a chestnut is the easiest to spot because they look black

Its one you have to train your eyeballs for. For sure lol. If you're interested type in "dense pheomelanin" into the search bar there are a few good threads on it.

They are only "black chestnuts" if they are both Homozygous DP and Homozygous Sty. Otherwise they are more of a brownish/darker redish color.

When I created Prodigious I was pleasantly surprised to find out he was a SS horse who was hiding DP. It was nice because it saved me some GMT tokens.

When I went back and looked at a DP thread I realized I was wrong when I didn't add that you can create a black chestnut. I totally didnt retain that information when I was first learning about DP haha
