Comparison Test Question
  • I have a question about the comparison test. I have a colt who tested as good as his sire as a foal, so I kept him because I like his color and markings. I used a GMT on him to take off splash, and then I was trying to verify he got his sire's copy of DP and accidentally wasted a GMT adding it. I thought sooty buckskins only dapple if they do have DP, but evidently I was wrong. lol

Anyway, this is how he turned out:

I just did the comparison test again because I was curious if taking off splash would possibly upgrade him to STS, but now he's testing worse than his sire. Is that a common change when you GMT a colt's color?

  • Gmting a horses color does not affect their breeding ability or paper level.

Are you sure you didn't accidently test another stud? :)

  • I'm pretty sure it was this colt I tested. He's the only colt I've kept from his sire, and that's why I kept him instead of one of the others I've gotten from Judge Candy. I've gotten a couple from him that looked good, but they didn't pass BA like this colt did. :)

  • One thing I like to do is copy and paste the test result of a comp test onto the horse's notes. That way there's always a record kept so that if something like this DID happen I'd know who I tested him to and what the result was. Most likely you tested him against 2 different studs though.

  • His brothers had already been snipped by BA so I comparison tested him, then when he tested AGA I risked doing BA. I was trying to test out if his sire was uneven enough that all his foals would be snipped even if they were like this one and came out consistent with a better PT than either parent. That was before I found out PT had nothing to do with breeding quality. lol

  • If you have an uneven stud, just breed even papers to get a higher quantity of intact foals.

  • @ObsidianKitsune, I've started doing the copy/paste now when I comparison test.

I'll just chalk this guy up to learning! I could swear I tested against his sire the first time too, but if GMTing color genes never lowers quality on a foal then I must have messed it up somehow. If I accidentally tested him against his grandsire, that would explain it. His sire is superior to sire, so the colt could test AGA grandsire and still be worse than his sire.

  • I thought I did, @ObsidianKitsune. lol The sire is uneven but tested STS and passed SBA, so I bred to a mare of the same generation as his lower side and matched papers, B to Red.

  • That's really weird that he tested aga sire and then worse than sire. You can't test against grandsire either unless you own him as well, super strange.

I guess your only choice really is to chalk it as a learning experience. Only other possible thing is a bug in the system but no idea if that an be checked by Ammit plus I haven't really seen any similar bug posted before.

  • He did not test aga and then worse. Sorry it's just not possible. Must be just an accidental mixup.
  • See, this is why I asked. I'm glad to know that GMT can't make horses worse because I have several I used them on besides him. lol

I still have no clue how I could have messed it up with this colt, I was sure it was him I tested so carefully, but I must have. Oh well, I can deal with me being an idiot, it's not the first time. :D
