Sheep

So I bought a herd of sheep and they were all pregnant, and quite a few of them looked like my horses in my barn! One of them looks like my current stud, and 3 of them looks like the champagne foal I have. But I have a question: How the heck do you get them to trust you? Every time I take a step, the whole herd runs in a circle for 20 minutes freaking out. (I have 40 sheep so it takes them awhile to calm down.)
Also I have a ram that is colorful (black, white, brown, tan, and an almost blonde colkr) and a few colorful ewes so I was wondering if I should breed them for color or breed to the 10 white ones to see what I get.? I'm not good at genes so if you help thanks! -
I firmly believe sheep are crazy, that's why they need dogs to keep them out of trouble. :D
The only spotted sheep I was ever around are the ones with four horns. Most call them Jacobys here, or Jacob's sheep. They can throw really adorable babies, very colorful, but I never managed to turn one into a pet unless it was bottle-raised. lol You might be able to get them to stop running away if you start feeding them from a brightly colored bucket. They probably still won't be smart enough to come in out of the rain in a very literal way, but they might let you near them for grain. :))Justa ~ ID# 44842

I had a few of those, but there wierd and mine were aggressive, so they were either dinner or sold! I have hair sheep in one pasture and Barbados sheep in another. We use the Barbados rams for a hunting party because they are basically wild sheep and loom like it, so the local hunters like them. All they have to do is call and go! The hair sheep are for our money making use more than the Barbados cause they only pay 20 dollars to hunt themThanked by 1JustaSaddletramp -
With our goats we have found the line is either friendly or not. Nothing you can really do with a wild one to make them much better.

My sister and I started our herd of goats by buying two untouched 4 month old doelings and attempting to train them for shows. They were very skittish and a judge told us we could never train them. 4 months later after working with them every day we took first and second place in all the handling classes at the state 4-H fair... under the same judge, lol. If you have time and consistency, they just might come around!ID# 43830

Pff I can domesticate any goat because you basically use their curisoty against them and boom. But sheep are flight animals so there much harder.Thanked by 1JustaSaddletramp

Bottle babies lol sure extra work but I refuse to chase a goat every bottle kid I've had was underfoot constantly but it helped with worming and handling milking every day they are just bigger dogsThanked by 1JustaSaddletramp

Ya the bottle babies are for sure more in your pocket. I prefer dam raised for a number of reason but we only keep bottle raised bucks.

Sheep are naturally much more flighty and cautious. If you can figure out which ewe is the "head" sheep, you can try bribing her with treats. If she calms down, many of the others may calm down as well. This sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Also, be mindful of how you move in the pasture. They will spook at a ything that remotely moves like a predator. Don't walk towards their rear or from behind them, that's usually where attacks come from. Don't be silent/sneaky, talk calmly to them. I've had a few sheep come around, but not many. Usually bottle babies or handling from a very young age is the best bet.
As for breeding, white sheep can hide tons of color. It's kind of like a sheet that covers everything, and you never really know what might come from it. Some breeds are more likely to carry colorful genetics than others. Icelandics and Jacobs are two very colorful breeds. Katahdin are fairly colorful, but white is still quite common. And of course mixed breeds can be anything the parent breeds can show. Personally, I would breed for temperament before color. Do you have any ewes that are less flighty than the others? If so, those would be the ones I used. Of course, depending on the breed and your location, you could sell extra lambs pretty easy, so breeding all might not be a bad idea. Just pick your replacement ewes from the less flighty dams.
Here is an overview of sheep color genetics. I'd be more than happy to help you figure out anything that confuses you.

Are you able to separate them? Not individually but maybe groups of 10. You'll probably never make pregredd with all 40 together. Would have better luck working each group in turns.
They sound pretty----

@Haltanny
They have good temperaments as I do breed for that. The problem is I am selling them and people want pop and color and sheep that stand out. So I do actually have tame breeders but the others have babies and they are running arou d. But I agree with you.
@ColorGoodStables
I am able to separate them with my dog. They are actually in separate pens now because most of them had given birth, and some of them have to still. We have a few bum lambs that are females so they are going to be tame obviously. They are pretty their colors are so cool -
I think it just takes time, in our smallish flock (23 sheep) of shetlands we have some very very flightly sheep, as in jump out the field to get away from you sheep, but some that are way too tame, they know I feed them though and if I have food I am their best friends.
I'm currently waiting super impatiently for the end of June when our lambs are due as the ram wasn't meant to be going in last year but he kept escaping.21170 ~ Breeder of quality Liver Chestnut and Chocolate Palomino riding horses and ponies with unique twists. It so cute. I breed dorper sheep.
They are friendly if I have food but otherwise they rib away if I don't got anything. Thanks tame ones are my breeders, but the wild ones I bought preggo so I can expand. I have allot of acerage that needs to be moved down lol -
I've had both sheep and I've used to breed dairy goats for show. I much preferred the goats. They're WAYYYY more intelligent and way less skittish than sheep. I sold the sheep after a couple generations. The lambs were friendlier and would approach but if the whole flock was following the flock matriarch they'd all turn into a freak show. Same with goats. The entire herd responds to the matriarch's energy it seems.ID# 24891
