11.50 Consistent PT = lousy show horse?
-
So I have a 5yr old stallion with an 11.50 Consistent PT score who can't place better than last to save his life. I really thought a high consistent PT score was a pretty good indicator of a decent show horse...what gives?BREEDING DARKNESS (ok black liver but it sounds cooler)

Link the horse please. His age is rather important. If he's young and still not placing well, then that's alright. However if he's old and leveled off in a bad place, best to get rid of him.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

Forgot to mention: PT score gives a rough estimate of how well a horse will train, and that's about it. So the higher the pt score the more likely it is that a horse'll level off in one of the very high levels, thus earning more points that a horse stuck in one of the lower classes.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Yeah, he's only 5, I wouldn't worry about it. Once it doubles his age I might give him a hard look at but even then would only cull him if he levels off last.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

And almost every single training session he shoots up a class. 5 years is young when taking in training and showing, so just let him settle and see where he does. For all we know he could level off first in 8LProducer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

The way it was explained to me was that high PT horses may be so busy racing up levels that they don't stay in one show level long enough to win and earn points - as if in real life you were entering a very talented green youngster in open classes against seasoned show horses at the top of their game. Once they settle in and compete at a level approaching their ability, they should start winning.
So in-game, a horse with a lower PT may be winning classes but never get past level -X- and not gain a large amount of points per show while your prodigy flounders around until they get to where they belong then starts to shine.More power! -
If you go with Obsidians analogy; He is shooting up from last in Local, to last in Regional, to last in National...the fact that he is last is just bum luck! Once he gets to the top of his ability he'll start raking in the points for you!

This is why a wide range of PTs is recommended.
Higher PT horses learn so much per training they move up to the next level before they are ready to be competitive at a lower level. So they don’t pick up many points along their way until they level off and really find their place. In the higher levels a horse will earn more points per show and make up for not making many coming up.
While lower pt horses score only improves a few points a week so they are able to show another week or two at the same level placing higher before they level up. Meaning they earn points along the way to leveling off even though they level off earlier at a lower level so won’t end up making as many points per show as a higher PT
This horse has bad luck to be last every class if he started out with a score a point or two lower he’d probably have landed in first place in every level as he rockets up the levels.
Back when only the top half of the class was profitable there used to be a player made chart floating about (on HJ1 at least) that listed the score range of each level and the average score for placing in the top half. From what I remember (it’s been years since I’ve last seen it but I used to reference it daily when entering horses) the average score range per level was about 10 points. I believe the average 9pt horse added about 3 or 4 points to their show score per training session.
Since HJ2 has a shorter season and I haven’t really focused on my show horses score vs. Placing it is possible that an average horse score improves more than 3-4 points per training session here -

Here is the first high PT show horse that I bought. She is 11 and still training and still has super crappy points!

Divine, don't show her for several weeks. Put her in your primary barn and let her sit. Then put her back in a show barn and see where she places. You, too, Deulinghawks. I don't know if it will work, but you have nothing to lose!
ETA: dueling, I just noticed you signature! :D

Divine's mare is earning points. Don't pull her from shows!

Keep showing your mare Divine, she's actually not doing too bad really, she's placing mid of her classes mostly, as Ammit says, she's earning points, keep showing her!!
