Breeding projects
  • Hello! I am new, joined this week.... I got a mare I really like, and I would like to breed horses that look similar to her (mostly white, bits of other colors). I'm a premed student that's dabbled in games with genetics before, so the concept isn't really new to me, but I don't know how to make breeding projects work well on here. What steps do I take? What do I invest in? What particular genes are causing her pattern? Even though she's a sabino, I'm guessing that's not the primary factor here.

    Here's the mare. :)

  • It's the W20 acting with the sabino which makes her so white :)
  • If you find sabino with any of the white genes you will find similar horses. But the white factor also makes a difference.
All these horses have w20 and sabino1.
Your's has white factor medium like this one

  • What you are seeing with her is the combination of Sb1 with Kit20. Kit20's effect is to enhance the amount of white on a horse. She also has Medium white factor, which increases the amount of white. She is homozygous non-sooty as well, so there's nothing darkening the color of the pigment on her.

Sabino 1 is a fairly safe gene, except when crossed with White 1, 2, and 3 with high white factor. If I were going to start a line, I would look for a stallion with Sabino 1 and Medium or higher White Factor, and start collecting mares with Sabino 1 or White 20 with higher White Factors. If I wanted paler colors like this mare's, I would concentrate on heterozygous Cream or both homozygous or heterozygous Champagne and homozygous SS (non-sooty). If I wanted a variety in the pigmented areas, any base colors and presence of Sooty would be allowed.

Not every foal will fit the desired level of pigmentation, so I would then cull any of them with more color than I was looking for and put them into my show string.

Other genes that can give similar effects would be white 1 or 2 with extensive white factor. However, since both of those break the Kit gene enough that they are almost always lethal if the foal inherits a copy from both parents, so it could be trickier to be successful than by using Sabino which is a generally safer gene, even when homozygous.
De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

  • Do also take a look at the Lethal white chart.
Which is on the announcements page as
"New KIT lethality and KIT mutation load explained"
As sometimes breeding with a lot of white can result in a dead foal. I don't want to put you off at all :)
If in doubt of your stallion and mare pairing post on here and someone will help. :)
