What are your hobbies?
  • I'm a jack of all trades master of none lmao! :))
I like drawing, painting, diys, woodwork and just making random things with whatever I find around the house.

Now I'm definitely not the best at any of these as I get bored to quick so have lots of little projects on the go.

I've contemplated making Show Browbands, Tack covers (Stirrups,Browband, etc) and other horsey related items to sell but there are so many that do it around where I live so don't see the point in me doing it lol.

What hobbies do you have? What are your hidden talents? :)

  • I mainly knit, crochet or quilt (machine quilt tops on a domestic machine then take it to a friends to borrow their long arm sewing machine and quilt frame. The long arm portion has become my favourite and I occasionally take in other people’s quilt tops to long arm quilt them together) but I enjoy learning new things especially handcrafts so I also know how to cross stitch, needlepoint, embroidery, needle felting, rug hooking, appliqué and hand quilting.

I get pain in my hands if I hold projects in certain ways for periods of time (especially since I broke my arm February 2017) so I bounce between different works all the time. I find knitting and crocheting to be the easiest to hold and my grip is moving enough my arms don’t get as fatigued.

Weaving on a loom is my next goal to learn.

Eventually I’d love to learn the entire process of collecting and processing fibres for all my various wool projects lol even if I don’t use that information after learning it
  • @riley1119 I can crochet a bit but could never knit!
I'm left handed so it made it hard for my mother to teach me to knit lol.

  • My biggest hobby is definitely writing. I mostly write poetry, although I've done some fiction. I also read a lot, although mainly just in the summertime since I'm in college right now and the reading for my classes is a little too overwhelming haha.

I love anything outdoors too. Hiking, biking, swimming, etc. A long hike is my perfect afternoon.

As for anything else creative... I can make friendship bracelets? That's about it haha. I'm not too talented when it comes to drawing, painting, or anything else on the artistic side. I do love to appreciate art though!
  • My aunt taught me to knit in elementary school but I never really caught on. I relearned again in high school but never really caught on lol then over the last 10 years I’ve taught myself to knit and crochet and to read patterns with a few good books in each but mainly the internet. I’d Google whatever stitch abbreviation and read through tutorials with step by step pics and then watch different videos to copy the movements and pause and replay until I got it.

I have a book to make crochet Amish puzzleball animals with the most amazing to scale pics of the entire process that really helped my crocheting even though they are quite intricate since as I went I could put the work on the picture to make sure that it was the right size and looked the same.
  • I love wood working and making things with my hands, I'm just awful at it! I did make a farmhouse table, turning the legs myself and all, and it didn't turn out too horrible. My dark corner tack trunk, on the other hand... It stays hidden in the, well, dark corner! I can sew enough to get by now and make a few of my own items of clothing and saddle pads just because I find good deals on fabric and obsess. I also write and participate in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), but that's the end of my creativity.

My main hobby in life costs too much money and time, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I competitively ride (jumpers with a dabble of eventing) and spend the majority of my free time out at the barn, especially now that my newest colt is born-he's a handsome little stinker and too smart for his own good. Safe to say, I'm a little smitten with him.

I also thoroughly enjoy running and hiking and hope to hike a trail on every continent. I hope to go to Peru either late this year or sometime in the fall of 2019 to see the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu, I'm still trying to convince the hubby to hike with me and go! :)

Paradise, while there are a lot of people that make them, consider making the bling browbands and bonnets. They're really selling like hotcakes right now! My bonnet maker has a 12 week wait list because she has so many orders!
  • @Phenergan I started trying to crochet a bonnet but it totally failed lol.

  • @ParadisePark I can understand that! I once attempted and ended up making a draft bonnet for a cob horse. I realized that maybe crocheting was not for me.

  • My mom decided to crochet or knit... something yarny... a bonnet for my OTTB. She put pompoms on the ear tips. The ears were about twice as long as the horse's ears, so they flopped over and bounced around. It was hysterical.
    More power!
  • Omg I can read a pattern easily enough and make adjustments as needed and my tension is good and the project looks great but I still get all sorts of different sized things when I knit or crochet items. I’ve made hats a few times but they always end up teeny tiny or giant. My last project started as a hat and I was like yeah we’re not going to close the top and call it a cowl.
  • @Riley1119 I have a 12ft by 14ft blanket because I kept forgetting to keep count. It's a weird mishmash of a hundred different colors because I just used whatever yarn I had found on sale. That was my first project haha
    Thanked by 1ParadisePark
  • Hiking hunting 4 h barrel racing trail rides sewing writing and just about anything that I can do with my horse.

  • I enjoy digital art and reading, though the hobby I put the most time and effort into is worldbuilding. I love creating worlds that feel like they could actually exist. My best friend's favorite thing to do is write, though she's far better at story plots than worldbuilding, so we put our creative efforts together and have been working on a book for about three years now. Still a long ways from being published, lol, but we're getting there.

  • @ParadisePark
If you have a desire to knit... Try Looming! It works up much faster and easier than standard knitting! Google it! It is very left hand friendly as I switch hands when my right one goes numb!

  • I’ve done loom knitting too and agree it’s easy to handle. I ran out of time and money one year so made scarves up for Christmas finished 8 in about 5 days

  • I paint, draw (charcoal, graphite, pastels, etc.), photography (My facebook page is Ashley Hayes Photography for anyone interested!), once I get a horse i'll be doing a lot of dressage :D , breeding and showing my rabbits and goats. Also, not much of a hobby, more like my business/job, but I am a master certified Equine Massage Therapist and until I can find work in that field I work on my sister's horses :) I also have a level 1 CHA certification in horseback riding instruction and plan on using it as a side job.

  • I don't have a whole lot of time to devote to hobbies at the moment, but I too am a bit of a Jack of all trades. I run, crochet (hats, scarves, and handwarmers), DIY home decor and I've also been working on a cosplay costume from last year's Wonder Woman film.

I've been told multiple times I should sell my crochet creations. I just haven't really had time to even think about setting up a sales page, let alone build up inventory! Haha
  • There's this horse game I play......

  • I write. I am apparently amazing though I never think so myself.

    Other than that...I...take pictures...of...my kids? I guess?

Lol I guess I occasionally play video games too. I love hiking fishing and camping but I don't get to do any much
  • I dabble in many different things, but my main hobby these days is got to be volunteering at my local Thoroughbred rescue, Hidden Acres Rescue for Thoroughbreds. I don't get to go out there often as I work two jobs and go to school, but when I am it's therapy. I help feed and clean stalls as well as help train.

My best horsey friend is a Westphalian named Evie who I took on as my first project horse. She is now adopted to the owner's sister. image

Right now we are getting ready for Florida's 2nd annual Thoroughbred Transformation Expo up in Ocala, FL.

I also love my camera. I take nature, animal and architectural photography.

When I'm not outside. I love to relax since I don't get to often. Playing ZooTycoon 2 watching safariLive and being an armchair researcher for a group I started called Leopards of the Mara which documents and identifies any leopard seen to help keep track of populations.

  • I train my dogs <3 Panto is a blue merle aussie of lines I just love. He is my dream dog, but we have not able to do much of anything, just a little bit of everything. He is still soooo immature, so we have had to give up on training groups for a while. He is such an awesome dog though. The sweetest guy your could ever meet, but does not have any ida how big he is, and have absolutely NO self control. Our other dog is really my fianés, a bratty, little Laponian Herder, Munti. He was meant to be my fiancés agility-dog, but something wasn't quite right. Turns out he has beginning athritis in his back.<br />
And I have bunnies! Meat mixes that live in our garage for now. I love them all to bits, and they are such amazing personalities.
    image
  • @Maribo Panto reminds me of my Kelpie x Heeler I used to own . He would try to sit in my lap sometimes thinking he was only small! :))

  • Yeah, but that is just sweet. Panto plays with his WHOLE body, he is very physical. Not at all TRYING to hurt anyone, but, like I said, he is soooo immature. He will jump all over you and run you straight down. He is not afraid of anything.

  • I don't know if I really have any hobbies per se. Nothing overly talented...

But I love to read, write, love hunting, fishing, I actually love to swim laps in an open lake, show dairy cattle (I fit, fill, and show).

I'm also gifted with energies, and meditate, so nature really rejuvenates my soul.

  • I don't have many hobbies as such, but in my spare time I hang out with my pets mostly. I have 2 dogs, 2 cats, a goat, 2 chickens and a horse.
Whiskey is a 2yo buckskin QH filly so I'm slowly getting her used to being handled and saddled in preparation for when I can afford to send her to a trainer. She's a lovely natured horse and I can't wait until I'm riding her out and about!
I go to dog training with my little terrier Pip, she's very smart but will only do what I ask if she knows I have treats haha.
Besides that, I enjoy reading (fantasy novels lately), baking yummy things then eating them all myself, and yeah I probably spend too much time on my phone playing games or scrolling Facebook.
  • My hobby (besides this game of course) is schutzhund or IPO. It's a dog sport that involves very precise tracking, obedience, and protection work. It's extremely challenging but also very rewarding.
  • I do couture sewing, though sadly all my stuff is packed up right now. Working too many hours. Can't wait to get back to it!
  • I'm terrible for teaching my pets tricks. I have trained a greyhound when I was about 5/6 years old, I then moved on to parrots, rabbits, guinea pigs and cats and horses. Here is a video of the first cat I trained, her name was Moky she is now in kitty heaven, I miss her =((
  • I dabble in photography, which you can check out at instagram.com/juliadfoo :-)
    Have a nyce day!
  • I mainly have the overly expensive hobby of raising and showing my miniature horses! I have over 40 head and it is always fun watching them mature, getting them fit, and seeing how they do in the ring! Plus of course enjoying their quirky personalities :D

I also collect breyer models and have one model show I go to every year and is way more fun than one would guess lol

I also sketch (mainly horses), read, and work out on xbox live with my sister in CO when we both have time :)

And I also sew blankets for my foals and occasionally sell some but I haven't had time our energy lately to get much done

  • I umm... chase my toddler around all day mostly. :)) I ride when I get the chance, barrel race/rodeo even less often even though it's pretty much my favorite thing to do. I can draw and paint pretty well and love to cook, which is good cause I'd starve if I had to eat my husband's cooking. I've recently learned to crochet and really enjoy doing that. I've been teaching my not quite three year old son to ride and, Lord help me, he loves it as much as I do. We just got him an older paint mare that's taking care of him really well and is very patient. I love seeing him love what I love lol. Other than that I just take care of my old ladies as I call them. Three out of the four horses we own are 20+ years. I don't know how I managed to start running an old horses retirement home, but I wouldn't have it any other way. They've been there done that and don't make a fuss unless it's time to eat lol. They leave the shenanigans up to the youngster of the bunch, my only gelding Joker, and boy does his name fit him!
  • I kinda do all kinds of things (except travel :( ) but I mostly sketch horses or play with digital art and take care of my older brother's horse. plus i watch anime and read a LOT of Manga (Japanese comic if you don't know :)) ) you can say that i'm a nerd :)) i'm working on saving the cash so that i can also go to farrier school :x because i learned that we don't have any farrier's within 40+ miles where we live so we have to call for one (we live by a state line) out of state. i also wanna learn veterinary too.

  • I think I'm very lucky that my main hobby is also my job. I illustrate for magazine, books, advertisements, cards, patterns, etc. Basically, if it catches my interest, I'll dabble some work for it. Here's a sneak peak of the current project I'm working on.

    image

My other hobby is cooking! And I'm fat enough to prove that haha. I love making random combinations, trying new dishes, making food for others. I find it a bit difficult to replicate some dishes sometimes since I abstain from animal products, but I figure out a compromise. I don't do much cake baking, but I do sometimes make my own breads, and dough bases.

And finally, I'm a bit of a green thumb as long as it doesn't have flowers. Bog plants, cacti, succulents, herbs, produce, etc I somehow keep going for forever. So far my orchid has been a miracle in that it hasn't died and I've saved a second one (save my soul). Idk, I just like plants a lot.

  • @Riverstone18 Manga is my weakness, along with anime! I get so easily hooked on series that I end up sneak reading page after page at 3am lol. Recently this year I discovered Webtoons which are comics which are independently created and always released on certain days. I'm hooked!
