Cool Genes
  • This discussion is both for genes that exist or ones you think would be cool genes in the future.

    Cool Existing Genes:

    Snowflake
    Axioms
    Nexus
    DP
    KP
All of the Rainbow Riot genes

Cool Genes (that don't exist in game):

    Albinism
    Melanism
    Peacock Spotting
    Chimera
    Giraffe Markings
    Stripes
Dessert pony (donuts, cotton candy, cupcakes etc.)

If I've messed up, it's because I don't know much about horse genes in real life.

  • Chimera isn't a gene or an interaction, it's an animal with two different DNA codes in different parts of their body. You've heard of conjoined twins? Chimera are "blended" twins, to put it very simply.
  • Horses cannot be albino the closest is either hom cream or an extensive white spot gene.
Brindle can be caused by chimerism.
21170 ~ Breeder of quality Liver Chestnut and Chocolate Palomino riding horses and ponies with unique twists. Specializing in Kit Promoter with fancy white patterns.
Coming soon ~ Snowflake, Nexus and Ice5
  • Lacing patterns -basically reverse dapples down the back that look like a giraffe or lace pattern.
Flea-bitten gray - I haven't encountered any of those on HJ2, only the dappled grays. Bloody shoulder markings would be fun as well!
Birdcatcher spots - not linked to a specific gene, but runs in families and causes small white spots on the body.

And Brindle horses in rl are quite interesting. On HJ2, a brindle horse only has one genotype. However, in real life, a brindle coat color can be genetic (linked to hair loss I think) but most often it is twins fused in the womb like Goliath said. This means that the horse actually has two genotypes expressing on the same coat! If you DNA test hairs from different stripes in the coat you will get different genotypes.

  • I've had three quarter horses with birdcatcher spots, or rather something like that. My now 21 year old mare, they popped up on her when she was 17. Her daughter has them as well but got em when she was younger, probably 4. My gelding is 10, when I got him at age six he had several random white spots even one small one that extended a white stripe into his mane. They come and go on him. My dad also has one 10 year old mare that looks appy with so many rump spots on one side that I wouldn't believe she's a registered quarter horse if I hadn't known her all her life and saw the year the spots came in. They just get thicker on her every year. My dad bred and raised all of them and they do go back to the same TB bloodlines eventually. I'm not an expert on color genetics or anything like that so I'm just guessing that they're birdcatcher spots cause they kinda fit the description.
  • Paint on Zebra Stripes are in the main tack pack. I’m not sure which upgrade unlocks them, but they are one of my favorite tack items.

Having a similar giraffe and leopard patterns and maybe also black tiger stripes would definitely be high on my list either as a tack pack or a new gene. So much fun!
  • @Goliath
Yeah, I knew that chimeras were the result of one twin dying and absorbing the other (thus possessing two sets of DNA). I don't know why I wrote chimera (I was distracted while writing the first post. My cat was trying to eat something she wasn't supposed to). I didn't know that chimera caused brindle horses though.

    Nice Dessert Pony! @Paradise Park.

  • I would LOVE the Fleabitten gene! It will bring interest to Grays! So they would need at least one gray gene and one fleabitten gene! The reason I dont breed them is they loose all colour when they age. The cool thing is too is there could be a chance for a "bloody shoulder" when hom! Or it could act like Whitefactor and it builds up through the generations of fleabittens!

  • I think the fleabitten and bloody grey would be so cool!

Also reverse brindle. Im not sure if that true brindle or something else but it's be neat. Its be really cool to update the brindle artwork. Its amazing as it is but some brindle hoses barely have any stripes on them.
The bird catcher spots and lacing would look sweet too.

  • From the 5 minutes of research I just did (thanks, Google!) it seems like flea bites might be a recessive gene not linked to gray? So maybe it would end up working like snf or kp or gp, where a horse can be a carrier, but it only shows if they carry the gray gene. And then bloody shoulder is a somatic mutation where the flea bites are concentrated in a specific part of the coat, so not really inheritable.

  • Thanks y'all! I'm still holding my fingers for bird catcher one day! It's why I breed for minimal white m, it's sort of similar!

  • Beautiful artwork on those!
    Really incredible.

You can get horses like your Chimera example from a somatic mutation too. It's as if the agouti just failed to push all the black out to the points, leaving a dark patch.
  • It's times like these that I really miss my laptop and Photoshop!

Also I think I'd almost sell my soul for that lacing! I think that'd look amazing on my new champagne line.
    They all look so good

  • I'll go with somatic mutations too if it means I can have random wth patches!

Trust me @ColorGoodStables, you don't want PS right now! The recent updates has angered the art community since it's in a broken state, ugggh.

I wasn't sure how extensive to draw the lacing but it's so pretty *U*
    #4519
  • I've never seen lacing that far down onto the torso, but I've only seen a handful of horses with it - your depiction of it is exquisite.
  • The elementals would be awesome. :)
  • I could really get behind those birdcatcher spots! love them
  • Yep, it can be a little trickle down the back to pretty much spilling all over the horse!

  • Oh yes! I wasn't suggesting you took it too far down, just in real life I've never seen lacing that extensive. It certainly does happen.

Is that Sable Wing in the second pic? Poor dear got a giraffe neck to match her markings.
  • Oh I am in love with how the lacing looks! That would certainly be something
  • I love how the lacing looks! I'd love a horse with that.

  • My th mare has birdcatcher spots on her back, butt and right front leg, they make for really unique markings as that's the only other white she has besides her star, strip and snip on her face

  • Love the look of lacing it is stunning.
  • They look great Bourbon, nice artwork!
  • Thank you all :)

@best friend My livelihood is digital art so it just comes naturally I guess? Just painting over the generated horse image in a program called Adobe Photoshop.

  • Mandlebrot? What is that?
  • It's a fractal geometry that is based on chaos theory and makes these amazing patterns with the numbers. It's awesome and makes some really beautiful art.

  • @Puissance is enchanted with Mandelbrot and has been working for weeks on putting an overlay onto a HaJ horse portrait he saved. He'll be tickled to find other players that love it!
  • Wrong kind of fractal math. You need texture/landscape generation, perlin noise generation etc. While neat Mandelbrot sets and the likes have almost no practical use in image generation.
  • This is a horse I almost bought. Chimera?image

I ended up with his half sister though (years later). That’s not the best best picture of him but I’ll look for better.

  • Y'all are too technical for me with texture generation and perlin noise. I just think Mandelbrot is fascinating and want to make a picture of a pony covered with it.
