Let's Discuss Pastures Again, I Can't Decide!
-
8 stallion; 3 slots. I have a problem. :)) I'd love your help deciding my main pasture participants for this coming season!
I am beginning to expand my cobs, so this guy's a feasible option. I do, however, have a pasture dedicated to cobs, so I don't think he's too high in the running. My main pasture is all drafts.
BV Ursa Major
I love his DP and his pearl, both are traits I breed for. And, he's hom sooty, which I love. I do plan to get at least one or two pasture crops from him before he goes, but I haven't decided when. :)
BV I Am King RS
Homo macchiato! But, no sooty. I'm moving more towards lots of sooty, and he doesn't fit that goal--but I love the mach.
Am torn, send help.
BV Silver Marvel RS M
Homo KP and homo sabino, I love this guy. My trouble: not every mare in my pasture has two kit genes. When making hets with this goober, I try for het KP with two kit genes to create better odds of homo KP G3s.
BV Pumpkins Are Coming KP
Axiom! In the future, I plan to have a double dilute pasture for him to cover, because I love axiom on them the most. Right now, though, I love the nexus look on his babies.
BV Jack of Spades AxSbP
I love hom DP on a bay, but he's also hom frame (Freaky Friday). Again, I love him and I do breed for DP, but I do have to be extra careful when choosing studs in the following generations.
BV The Hallows Call FFRS
Ice 14 and hom pearl! Only hangup, no sooty. But, he's got pearl, so I think he's a strong contender.
BV Avilius i14
This is my classic champagne line foundation stallion, and he's got ice 5! Bad news, not all my mares will give me classic champ foals (they've got agouti).
BV Champagne Blizzard i5
So, yeah. Decisions, decisions! The toughest part is most of them carry a gene that I breed for, so I can't rule out by genetics.
Lol, help? :)ID# 25784 Home of quality Artylian Drafts & Cobs
Breeding little classic champagnes, pearl snowflakes with DP, KP with DP and other goodies, and axiom on pearl dilutes. -
Breed your Cob pasture and clear it. Transfer mares from the main pasture into that now open pasture and add a stallion. Breed, clear, and repeat for the next stallion and his mares.
Then slap a stamp on that pony and send him to me. ;) -
I love your Macchiatto boy. I would put the KP boy and your Macchiatto boy for sure in pasture.Thanked by 1BlueValley

What I do is I have numerous lines in my pasture. I also have a 30 stall pasture where I do my breeding, so I can always mix and match which mares are in there, and which stallion gets put thereProducer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.
Prices are almost always negotiable.Thanked by 1BlueValley -
Yep, what obsidian said. In this manner I was able to get a lot more stallions bred used than I normally do. Have all of them in the main one, then do genetic search by however, pick the mares best for the stallion, move the stallion but keep mares in their then add unbred mars and a stallion. I did 10 mares to a stallion but you can do whatever.
I personally would go with closed genes first then freaky Friday, . Then eldest stallion, then rotate. Or just always rotate, with emphasis on whoever.
Or get more mares and do multiple breeding shifts....Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.Thanked by 1BlueValley -
I would do what CrewCut suggests - have a clear pasture to move them into then you can chose who to breed to batch by batch or even one by one :)Thanked by 1BlueValley

Yup, I am going to do it the way CrewCut and ObsidianKitsume suggest. Small batch breeding, with my big pasture as a holding ground for the bonus.
That way I don't mix my champagne with my silver bay with my black. :)Thanked by 1BlueValley -
The way that has worked out for me so far is to pick 50 mares to get the pasture bonus. I have all of my studs named with the last few digits of their ID number at the end of their name. Towards the end of each month, I go through and decide which mares I want to breed to which studs, and add that stud's two or three digit ID code to the end of their names. After I breed my 50 mares with the bonus, I cycle through the rest of the mares, adding all the ones with a specific stallion's number, breed them to their stallion, and so on. The renaming part is pretty fine consuming but I enjoy going through all my mares every month.ID: 16853Thanked by 1BlueValley

@CWScowgirl87 I’m so stealing that idea! I’ve been trying to figure out how to denote which mare goes to which stud, that’s perfect!
-
I would go with the suggestions of rotating the pasture time and breeding your smaller batches so you get the genes you want bred. Your closed genes and older boys would be my first choice of studs bred, then the freaky Friday, and so on.Thanked by 1BlueValley

I do something similar as cowgirl, but I put it at the beginning so when they're in pasture alphabetical order will put the mares from one stud together. I also put when gen at the beginning. So its goes by gen, then by which weight B for "big" S for "small" then 2 digits which represent a certain gene/stallion. Also makes it easy to look for what I want. Especially since I have 1600 mares now. Also the alphabetization helps my mild OCD.
BGT "big grullo toby"
1G BGT A Nice Hunter
2G SDP selling liver
SDP Small DP
Its so nice just to hold control then click across all the mares of similar genes. Then after that I have A2B, A2S, A3B, etc representing the weight, and paper of my show line. I chose A so it goes right after my breeding horses. Then all of my show horses have word names. (This makes it easy to auction as well as all unnamed ones will go to the top and you can click manage auction and enter them all in)

@CrewCut He's pretty handsome!
That's an interesting way to try! Only problem: I don't have a pasture I want to clear.
There may be an easter present in my future!
@bestfriend Thank you! I love him too.
@HunterUnderSaddleGirl My eldest is 12, I think, so I'm definitely not in a rush. I am hoping to figure out a rotation that I like. :)
Thanks for your advice and thoughts everyone! I've definitely got a couple things to think about. :)ID# 25784 Home of quality Artylian Drafts & Cobs

Even a 10 horse pasture works, then you can just put them in there and breed 10 mares at a time
