Not passing breeding advice?
  • I'm scrolling through the forum, but getting frustrated looking for an answer. I'm a new player, and still fumbling my way into this genetics thing. I have several horses who have not passed breeding advice, and I can't find any immediately obvious reason for them to have failed. Is there something I am missing? What should I be looking for when a horse fails breeding advice?

Decision making is not my strong point.
For the next 72 hours I’ll be focusing on _____ (insert breeding goal here).

  • That means the horse did not pass whatever benchmark was set to be considered good breeding stock. Every horse is given an invisible number when created (whether by herd helper or bred as a foal). When you use Breeding Advice, it checks the number the horse was given against the benchmark, and if it’s about as good as or higher, the horse passes. In other words, there is no way to simply look at a horse and be able to tell if it will pass or not, so it’s not that you missed anything.

  • If you post links to the horses we will be better able to help!
  • If you're not Basic Upgraded yet, then you can't paper, but commonly on foundations it means they had a paper level of Failed, which is the lowest it can get and always results in an alteration. Breeding advice tests a foal or horse against the quality of its parents, and if it is significantly worse than either, it will be altered. If the horse in question is a foundation, it will be tested against a basic quality. Besides paper levels, a horse's breeding quality is a hidden number. :)

  • I had a look, and your biggest problem seems to be that you are not breeding equal quality horses. I didn't look at them all, but those I did look at had sires of B paper or above, and your mares are regular creates (yellow papered).

To have a higher chance of an intact foal if you breed C to yellow, B to red, A to blue and *Gold to *Star. Although when you learn their AFPT you can easily find a good match between the scores (a low A to a high red i.e.).

  • Fallen Shadows, thank you so much for that information!

My bank account hasn't allowed me to even basic upgrade (I'm not poor, but I'm definitely broke!) and so I didn't know about the papering and uneven breeding.

Maribo, should I maybe check out the mares for sale and find something with better papers then? Since I'm not getting anything good with my creates.

Decision making is not my strong point.

  • It's not so much that the creates aren't getting you anything good, it's that they aren't up to the studs' standards. If they were bred to C papered studs the foals would pass okay. Something you could do is keep breeding how you are, but not to breeding test until you can breed the offspring to the studs'. That way you should be able to find some foals from their crop who pass, and you won't have to throw away the mares, and you can get the shinier genes more concentrated. :D this is called bootstrapping when done more extremely. :)

  • @towdolly, if you'd like to use any of my stallions, I'll give you a free breeding. I looked at your page, you seem to like drafts and cobs. I have a Perfect Foundation C papered draft, and two C papered Cob boys that have produced really well for me, an appaloosa and a solid liver. But you're welcome to use anyone. Just send me a PM.

Here is a cheap red papered mare on the public sales list that hasn't been bred this year !
BREEDING DARKNESS (ok black liver but it sounds cooler)
    And Silver Blue Pearls
Focusing on Sooty Plus, Sb2, W3 and W10

  • Nothing wrong with your foundation mares! We all started with them. Just breed them to a nice foundation stallion though. If you put the mares in a pasture for at least 30 days you will have a higher chance of better foals.

Breeding advice compares the foals to both sire and dam, so if say the sire is a heaps better breeder than the mare (say A or star papered stallion bred to a foundation mare) the the foal have much less chance of being as good as the sire, so won't pass breeding advice. Many people try and improve each generation, but its easier to judge breeding quality with papering

At this stage selling the foals that are altered, in the public auction, and using the money to buy slightly older horses that already have a good amount of points will help your income

If you want some red papered mares, I can sell you these 3 for 1000 each. One has been bred this year, but the other 2 are still open.

  • Thank you all so much!

CrewCut, I'll get back to you... yesterday was kind of crazy. Instead of going home after work, my wife and I went out and bought a car to replace the one that was totaled on the 2nd. So I'm just now getting back to these replies.

I also sucked it up and used a little of my savings to get a basic upgrade, I have wanted to almost since I started playing, mostly because I'm so incredibly impressed with what Ammit has put together here!

Decision making is not my strong point.

  • sorry about the totaled car, yikes! But congratulations on the new car and the upgrade.

The offer still stands, if you decide to look at outside studs once you've papered and sorted through your mares, any of my boys is available to you.
  • That sucks about your car! But congratulations on getting a new one.

Chiming in with CrewCut -- you're also welcome to look at my studs. If you like drafts I have several foundation boys that might interest you. I'm happy to put them up for breeding if you see anything you like.

(The easiest way to do that is to use "search horses" with my ID# in the owner field: 41674)
