Hello all.
My name is PrimerDimer, and as you can probably tell, I'm new to this site. I'm intrigued by the complexity of genetics, and am currently running a research project on MRSA antibiotic resistance plasmids. I look forward to having a bit of fun with this game, and engaging with the community here as well. -
Hi PrimerDimer, welcome to a great game and community!
Don't forget to apply for your Welcome Pack barn and extra 25,000 game cash: http://hj2.huntandjump.com/forum/discussion/4132/did-you-join-in-the-past-2-weeks-get-your-free-new-member-pack
Feel free to check out the Beginners Barn chat room. There’s usually someone around who can answer questions fairly quickly! Go to this page: http://hj2.huntandjump.com/buddy_chat.php. Find the link that says Confluence Farms |Beginners Barn, (it’s usually at the top!) click it and you’re there!

Welcome! It's a great community here and I think you'll want to stick around. :D
I also think it's a funny coincidence that I named a stud basically the same thing as your username:

Hehehe, that's cool.
Primer Dimer is actually a term used to describe what happens when two pieces of DNA Primer used for PCR reactions are close enough to being complimentary that they bind to each other instead of binding to the target DNA sequence. ;) -
Wow! That is super cool! Can you tell us a little bit more about what you are researching? Sounds exciting! I'm still in high school but have NO idea what I want to do with my life.
If you are creative writing/drawing I have a giveaway going on for a show horse. (Has someone explained the importance of show horses?) Too bad you missed my game of guessing the horses genotype through observation, and the parent's genotype.
Here's my giveaway/contest

Yeah, I'm looking at the efficacy of using mecA genes for differentiating between wild type Staphylococcus aureus and the mutant variety that possesses antibiotic resistance. mecA is the most common plasmid that confers methicillin resistance, and by using primers that code for the forward and backward regions of this gene, I can tell the difference between resistant and nonresistant strains in about the course of an afternoon. Its still in the beginning stages, but I'm hoping that I can put together a setup that not only cuts down on the time it takes to test for MRSA, but makes it cheaper and more accessible for rural healthcare facilities.
Also, that looks like a cool contest! I think I might give it a try!Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms -
Wow! How do I do what you’re doing? I’ve always liked science stuff, and when I had a decent teacher I liked genetics.
I’m guessing you already know but for every 10 points a horse has they will give you (about) 1 point a day. There’s an exact formula but I don’t remember what it is. So if you have a 2,000 point horse they will earn you 6,400$ a month, which is twice what a normal horse goes for in auction.Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses. -
The formula is: (total points) x 0.75 = (total weekly show bonus) / 7 = daily show bonus
So the daily show bonus of the 2000 point horse would be:
2000 x 0.75 = 1,500 hbs/week
1,500 / 7 = 214 hbs/dayThanked by 1PrimerDimer -
Well the best way to get involved in research like that is to find a science professor you work well with at whatever university you end up going to after high school. Ask them about what their own research, get to know them, and ask about student research resources. I know it varies by location, but some of the smaller colleges have quite a lot of resources set aside for student projects. Ask them about your idea, and see what they think about it. They might send you to someone else in the department who's more knowledgeable about the topic you're interested in, I know this project has me bouncing between two or three at a time for advice.
Some of the professors at my school have students that work with them in their lab, on their own projects and with the professor on their research. Its a great way to get your name out there, if you find you like research and want to do it for a living. -
Ok! I’ll definitely do that. I have no idea what university I want to go toBreeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

That might be something to consider, then, in your college search. Asking questions about how much student research is encouraged, whether there are local research programs to support such endeavors, and if there are any professors who specialize in your area of interest are all good ways to help narrow down your choices.
