Best way to purge show horses?
-
So I am fortunate enough now to have a large show string, and every year I go through and compare large barns of show horses against each other by age. If anyone "sticks out" as being way off, I look at them, and their show record, I might watch them for a season or just auction them if I feel its too far lower than their peers. Is there a better way to do this? Any tried and true methods?Hidden Creek Farms # 31285

I used to use the search and go through each age by total points and cut the bottom few. I’d only look at the spays and geldings and start at the oldest and work down to about 9 or 10 years old. I’d only look at the horses that had levelled off but now I just leave them since everyone is contributing to my daily show bonus.
Although over the last month or two I have been tattooing showhorses and using the ones I’ve bred as prizes for my Double Or Nothing Contest to help newer accounts boost their show bonus. -
I only get rid of levelled off ones who have less than 200pts and always end up at the bottom of the class - I don't get rid of many :)
They are often the ones with high PTs who end up in 8R always at the bottom and even though they are only 8or9 years old with a PT of 12 their result score in the class never seems to go up!
Unless of course they are pretty and they stay forever regardless :D -
I used to search for profit back when that was a thing--I'd find some with over a negative thousand, so those would either get auctioned, if they had less than a hundred points, or they would go to a certain barn that I never showed to hold their points but not throw any showing money down the drain. I noticed when Ammit removed that option, so I asked her about it, and she says it doesn't matter. So go ahead and keep everybody!

There is a 'Profit' option available in sorting. I haven't been able to make any sense of the results yet, may be it just doesn't really do anything? -
horses used to have their own line of text reserved to see how well they're doing in classes. it would calculate how much was spent on each class against how much was one, and then display it under Total Points in red if it was negative, and black if it was positive. I don't know what the sort option still does if it doesn't sort by that.

Honestly I don't cull my show horses - they just sit in their barns from the day they're born/sorted until the day they die lol. I figure every point helps, and if I need more barn space, I work to earn more money to buy more barn space.

I keep all my show horses in 15 stalls barns, this way i can keep better tabs on whos not showing well and then sell them. I'm trying so hard not to super over expand! I gotta collect them Colts lol

The only show horses I cull is those with roughly 100 points or less and are due to age out in the next year or so. They aren't going to make me much money so if I need cash they are the ones I sell
