2 to 4 stallions per gen...
  • How do you all decide what stallions stay intact? Do you keep 1 stallion per line per gen or do you do multiples? I am again at 200 stallions and no way to use them all. I have a few I use every year. Mostly because they are minimal to medium white factor. Most of my studs have extensive white factor. What makes you choose who to keep as herd sires and which to held and put into show herd?

  • First off I rarely look at any foals before testing and use the bulk testing options on the barn pages to reduce the number of pity passes (the pretty ones that should be culled because they don’t meet your breeding requirements but they’re so pretty). I use all testing and weed out the inconsistent ones and any that don’t fit my colour requirements (I only breed Grullos. If a sire has a special pattern like ice or nexus I only allow descendants that inherit it to stay intact.)

All colts must be superior to sire. All brothers must be AGA, also if a brother has a higher paper level the others will be culled. Next I either geld the colts that have missed patterns both parents had or If there’s more than 3 brothers I keep the 3 highest PT, depends how snippy I’m feeling that day. (I love culling my breeders into my show stock so I really don’t have a problem sniping extras although I was just realizing that I have about 20 - 2nd gen studs at the moment that I need to cut down on but most haven’t been compared to brothers yet)

I have all my Barns sorted by generations. Once I’ve culled using all the tests above I look through each barn page and if a barn is starting to have a majority of a higher paper level I will cull all of the lower levels

  • I cull almost exactly the same as Bandit. It always surprises me how many boys I snip even AFTER they've passed ALL the testing.

I have 3000 + or - horses total, and 26 stallions of breeding age. I allow one in each generation of each of the colors I'm breeding for these days. Right now that's w3, wM, and Sb2 (all on my black and liver chestnuts), and one solid.

  • I just use SBA. If it passes SBA and is consistant it stays intact. I don't breed every horse every season but I consider my stallions my paint box and I try to have as many colors as possible. If they don't breed for me they earn their keep at public stud and in the show bonus.
