I have already implemented a soft cap on stalls. That is why stall prices now increase as your barn get's larger.

My total is currently great but that's thanks to a load of old horses who will age out before the competition ends. The most frustrating thing is that almost all the high point show ponies are in auction. I stayed up late last night to try to grab some but still only managed one, which was good but not worth the exhaustion today. It's very hard to predict the market when it's so skewed by the existence of the competition, too, so I'm kind of jumping between strategies on a whim. Which has worked in a way up to this point but may not continue to do so!
I think this competition requires a huge amount of luck. It'll be interesting to see how it goes, it's unpredictable due to being such an artificial set-up. -
I think the presence of dumped on the market show horses has really "messed up" the competition in a lot of ways. It's fine but It has so massively skewed results that I think it almost is not fair to award the prizes based on the luck of having gotten those horses.
I am going to have to think about what is actually fair to do here.

I grabbed several of Dark Star's horses in the auction and that's what has gotten me up so far. The reason I was able to get them though, is happening to be lucky enough to live in the same time zone as the game and also because of years of experience winning auctions (my dad and I were ebayers). If that's not what I was supposed to do, I'd like to be able to change it now to be able to still try for some kind of prize. I was playing as hard as I could just to see how far I could get, simply for my own love of a good challenge (and totally having a blast, might I add). However, I want to play right! So if there's a change please keep us updated! :)
-
It is very difficult to pick up the show ponies from auction when you don't live in the same time zone and the prices on the sales board have been pushed sky high- but I am still having a lot of fun with this. You've really got to manage your money well and spend it wisely. Since I am usually too late to get those 'super' show ponies everyone is after, I've been looking for horses that might not have a huge amount of point but have levelled off well or look like they will level off in the upper half of a class. Its not getting me crazy points, but I'm sitting mid-ish field and haven't utilized the mass 'pasture breed and auction' method because Ammit said she was planning on limiting that in the future. I have sold a few horses directly back to the game when I was really hurting for cash and spotted some good show ponies for sale. I'm interested to see how quickly this account can catch up to my main account using the bootstrapping method (once my daily bonus is better lol) so I'll probably keep playing even after the contest is over.
EDIT; And again I forgot to log out on the forum lol Can you tell I'm not sued to two accounts? -
I have a new thought. Perhaps maybe only allowing auction bids to increase by 100hbs or so at a time? I've been seeing the bids be pushed from like 2600, to say 3300, then you have someone coming in and pushing it to 5k or more. Or maybe a mac amount of times per hour a player can bid on a horse instead of people sitting there refreshing the pages.
-
@kassierae I could see that working. That way the bids can't go nearly as high because people would be waiting until the very end of the auction to place their one bid, instead of placing tons of bids. Also, though, it would make the auctions not nearly as profitable for other people trying to sell good breeding stock or rank specials.ID: 16853
-
I always thought the public auctions weren't really intended for breeding stock and rank specials. I know I've never sent them there, heaven forbid nobody bids and they just get yummed. Not worth it, imo.
At this point I'm debating whether this contest is even worth putting time into anymore, as it seems there is almost no way to catch up to the leaders. -
Wow, teach me to respond only to the last comments in a thread. Yikes!
The auction has definitely made things, uh, more complicated. And suddenly yes, the people with a bunch of old high-pointed show horses have a significant advantage. There are still horses that come up for sale on the public boards though, and the foundation rescue has a bunch of stock. They just don't have thousands of accumulated points now.
(As more constructive feedback that is a 1100% awesome change. It may not be terribly beneficial to new players yet because most of them only have a handful of points, but the longer they sit there showing, the better for new players they will be.) -
I've not managed to get a single horse from the auction, but i am lucky to have the chance to log on during the day and trawl the sales board.
For me at the moment it's all about earning money to buy show ponies. I have 7 horses I think that have a chance of passing at roll over, I will probably send most of these to auction before year end.
I think the best long term earners are the horses that do appear on the sales boards fairly randomly - 200-500 points. Often mares and stallions rather than show ponies. These are incredibly useful. I hope this is a fairly natural and common occurance rather than skewed by the competition.
I'm fairly sure most of the comp accounts cannot actually afford the prices that many go for on the auction (and the sales board sometimes) they must be going to more mature accounts. -
Same. Usually by the time the auction hits I don't have enough to bid on more than one horse and they usually shoot out of my range pretty quick.
I am a little annoyed about the people who are buying these horses at auction and then trying to flip them on the sales boards for 5X what they paid for them, though.
-
@Kassiera I do actually use the auction to dump breeding stock that I wouldn't use. A lot of the time I won't bother waiting around for people to pick up horses or I've run out of funds to fully test so I will dump stock there. There's usually nothing wrong with the horses there, I just don't want that particular colour in my line or I've not tested it against it's sire.
I was wondering, would it be worth having staggered auction times Ammit? So half the stock is auctioned at both 0000 and the other half at 1200 so us people outside the time zone stand a chance? Maybe even every 4 hours so it's super even, and with the horses having a notice on the time they're going to be sold at.
As a newer player I found it very difficult to get off the ground since I just couldn't keep up with auctions and the sales board has been pillaged. However what was a massive help was the foundation rescue starting to show! I was having a look through the horses earlier today and picked up two or three prospects who were already starting to get a nice ranking consistently.#4519 -
Posting from my Reg. Acct. because that's where I saw this first...
I'm having fun with the contest, though I know that I'm probably one of the lower-ranking players. I'm currently out of money and waiting for the auction, but am actually enjoying myself with what little I have, it's a refreshing difference between the hundreds and hundreds of horses I have on this account. -
I can see how my dumping of pointed horses has made the contest more difficult, but it has help to point out more flaws. Honestly, the contest would still be just as much up to chance without my placing horses in the auction/selling them as it is with that addition. My actions have just made the fact more obvious. In 2 months there is really no way to get show points of any noticeable amount without buying pointed horses. Without my horses it would just be being won by the person who was lucky enough to grab the 50. 100 or 150 point horses in the sales or auction, rather than by the 1000, 1500 or 2000 point horses. My horses may have inflated the numbers, but they didn't change the fact that luck was always going to be the biggest determining factor.
From scanning my logs I can also see that selling or auctioning pointed show horses is not a good way to distribute wealth in the game. Many of my nice horses have been purchased by established barns who can drop 100k on show horses in the auction. The only other way for me to reliably get horses to new players is to try to connect with them on the forums and take the time to invite them to a chatroom and put the horse up for sale there. Not a big deal if you are only looking to move a horse or two, but I am trying to sell 100-300 horses a month to keep my earnings down. Getting horses into the hands of new players then becomes a lot of work. Throwing them all in the auction is much easier.
The soft cap on barns isn't harsh enough to really have much impact. I can still buy barns faster than I can fill them if I was so inclined. -
From what I've heard from this conversation, it would seem the problem isn't in newbies not starting out with enough but more in them being in competition with larger barns for resources makes thing all the more difficult. This probably wasn't an issue back when the player pool was smaller but I know I've seen the welcome pack thread blow up with new faces more and more lately so there's a lot more heads in the crowd.
Late game players have said that distributing their wealth is mutually beneficial to them as well as the newer players they help but seeking out newer players in need and making sure these resources reach the intended party can be exhausting in some instances.
Having a way to separate the newbies from the oldies could help this. Such as a newbie only auction house. Anyone can post horses on it but only accounts that are less than X amount of time is allowed to bid. After that grace period, you go play with the big dogs.
I would also go so far as the limit it to the free newbie accounts. Basic and premium upgrades could just produce the same problem in that auction house that exists in the current one.
Just my two cents. Take it or leave it.Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.

I have to start slow or people would have a total melt down.
"I can see how my dumping of pointed horses has made the contest more difficult, "
It made it different than intended. Not bad in anyway. It's not a big deal, I may just make a second ranking minus those big pointed older horses for prizes. Won't hurt anything.

We humans do tend to over react to massive change.
I am holding off on giving away any further horses until after the contest is over. Mostly because I think die off will leave me where I want to be and because I want to figure out a way to get them where they need to be. -
The first auction I missed Darks horses but was lucky enough to collect some that were for sale.
Last auction I was lucky enough to grab a few.
But with the competition going on and the regulars ponies are harder to get as more want them. It's a battle to the end and makes it harder for new players with free account as they have to keep the tabs open and just hope they get the horses they bid on.
I found it hard to get show ponies and RS in auction being low on funds and having to have all the tabs open. Once I got an upgrade it made it easier and I could easily win them.
But this comp has reminded me of when I just started and I feel sorry for new players or those with free accounts.
While it's still possible to get a be maintain a good barn with a free account it takes time and persuasion.
At the end I will merge my account and give away the show ponies to new and free accounts to help them out. I'm sure they will appreciate the help :D●▬▬▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●

To be honest if this was just normal game play, I'd be happy where my barn was at now, I don't have any of the really high point show horses but I'm just ticking along slowly and added some lower point ones when I can so my daily bonus although very low compared to most is slowly going up. Plus I'm at a stage where I can start the keep the odd breeding horseThanked by 1ConfluenceFarms

I think it would be cool to see where everyone is in 6 months and a year. See who keeps with it. I think it would be fun to do a contest on foals. Nobody would have points then. It's kinda all luck of the draw. Maybe something for future. Def makes me miss the funds in my regular account:)
-
It is hard to start. I have been on holiday for a week and only got back yesterday and there are a lot less horses for sale than there was last week.
To start with it was about trawling through horses for sale not just for pointed horses but to look where the older foundation horses have ended up in the shows. If they level off in a good place you can soon make lots of money even if they have none to start with.
Perfect foundations have always been the way to go. I have done this already with my second account ChilliFireFarm, about 8 months ago, when I was not competing with everyone else! I bought lots of PF mares and 1 stallion and these horses are still showing well for me and provide me with some foals every month.
Personally I love the game - I do spend too much time on here though!
I love to breed though and would be unhappy if the using the HH and then auctioning off was not available. I like to try to get the odd brindle and that is my best way of doing it - lots of waste I know but I do keep pretty ones and those with good PTs as well.
Your showing of the foundation rescue horses is the best idea yet. Plenty of advice to early players and helping out is very handy - and everyone is so lovely with that already.
Sorry for the long post!
Good luck everyone :) -
Also new players must remember to train their horses and show them - all horses should do this unless they are in pasture. I hate buying a stud who has never been trained - such a waste! I will pay more for high pointed studs :)
-
I don't have a ton of points, and am pretty close to the bottom, but my strategy was to buy cheap horses. I picked almost all of my horses up on the sales board for create price or less, and most of them had at least some testing done already. Most of them had never been shown or had maybe a point or two. Of my total points I've earned about half of them since the start of the contest. I did breed a few of the intact horses I had, and altered most of those foals to add to my show string. I'm holding on to EVERYTHING since stall space hasn't become an issue yet - I haven't even filled my primary barn.
The way I'm looking at it is that a brand new player probably won't understand the value of searching through the auction to find high pointed horses, but if they see something on the sales board for less than create price they'll probably snatch it up. So that's the approach I'm taking.
It is pretty slow going. I love the idea of a mini game - some sort of way to pass the time while we wait to enter more shows or win the funds to buy more horses or enter more shows. It would also be awesome if we could somehow play a mini game with a specific horse to gain some extra points for the horse too - I don't know how feasible/fair/etc. that sort of thing would be, but it could also help educate new players on the importance of points. -
This has been an eye opening reminder of how things were when I first started on HJ1 and lived off infusions. I feel like we are headed in the right direction for new players with a solid community that is willing to share the wealth (available to adopt group) all sorts of information readily available on the forum. That being said, I know if I lost my upgrade on my main account, I would flounder without the auto shower.
This contest has taught me quite a bit in a very short time. First, I realize how difficult it is for a new player to just have spays/geldings and not breed all the pretty ponies I think the breeding aspect of this game is what keeps us all coming back. It tickles me when I find the perfect foal frolicking in my pastures! Second, show horses are hard to come by and can take quite a while to gather points. I've snagged a couple older high pointed horses, but have mostly been trolling the boards for things with a least 150 points. I've snagged some super cheap horses to drop into auctions. It certainly is slow going. I find myself pretty well ignoring my new account unless it is time to train or show.Specializing in W8, W3 & Kit M Cream & Pearl draft horses.
ID# 170 -
I am playing this account the same way as if I were to join again with a new account. I missed the first rush on pointed horses so it definately is slow going.
-
Having a Holiday with an RS that I could sell definitely helped give a boost to funds. I'll be able to do some bidding this Sunday. :) I love the auctions. I think its super exciting to get in a bidding war. Kinda feeds my bidding addiction without having to lug a horse trailer or buy more hay.Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms

I'm an actual new player, reading through all of your insights is enlightening.
From my experience, it is way too easy to blow funds on the create-a-horse option not knowing better. I burned through my beginner funds on my first account that way (so it's a side now)
A suggestion for the pointed horse/getting income rolling aspect of the game, possibly as a prerequisite to opening up create-a-horse:
Let each new account "claim" some pre-pointed horses in different stages of life, for example 18/15/12/9/6 yrs as SM/Ge/St/Ma/untested Ma respectively.
These are locked to the account, no selling or auctioning. On the "rescue" page, have a tutorial blurb about showing them biweekly and the passive income they generate for you.
Having them be different genders would create a spot for introducing testing and the pasture as well.
Over time these horses would die off, but players will have had time to get their own income stream established.
(Edited to add a couple ideas.)
Thanked by 1Dinascar -
Celestine here (aka Ren on my main account)
Mine is a much-delayed response to this post but better late than never I suppose. I am a very new player (on both my accounts) so I may have a slightly different view than the other players since I don't have any other experience to lean on. :)
Let me preface by saying that, in general, I'm a competitive person so while I certainly entered the contest for the fun aspect I've also been trying my best to 'win' as well and did have a plan going into the contest and have been tracking my progress so far in the game and making little notes to myself, mainly for my own tracking purposes and because that is just how my brain works.
The very first thing I did when I started the contest was hit the search board for horses. I was one of the lucky ones that started the contest early and I was able to find a few decent horses with points to buy up right away. Between the sales board and the auction, I was feeling pretty good about things. My main objective was to find horses that were right around create price but that already had points, I did pretty good with that. As the contest went on things became more difficult since the pointed horses at any decent price were bought up and the auctions were (and are) fierce. I ended up making spreadsheets of links to the horses that I wanted to potentially bid on and ranking which horses I wanted most, as the bid prices went up over what I wanted (or could) pay those were deleted and I went down the list. I think that, so far, I've been able to get at least one horse from those auctions that I've been trying to bid on horses from.
When all the high pointed horses were dumped into the auction recently that made things...interesting. I was able to get a couple but no where near enough of them to make it up into the real high points like the top players currently have. That said I feel like I'm doing pretty well for myself sitting in the top/middle of the pack, especially for a complete newbie to the game. I continue to look at the sale horses at least once a week (more if I have time) and buy those that I think are worth it. At this point most of the auction horses with high points sell for more than I either want, or can, pay for them. So far it looks to be slim pickings for the coming up auction so that will be interesting as well.
I'm really enjoying the competition though (even though I'm no where near winning!) as it gives me a goal to reach for and something to 'do' with my account as a newbie. I personally love games that have achievements that you can earn (and see what you've done) as you go through the game and sometimes get a little something as a 'reward' when you reach those goals. Achievements could be anything but something like: 'Earn x amount of money through showing' ... 'create x amount of horses' ... 'breed a red papered mare' things like that which are not impossible feats (and some that maybe are!) but also help to 'lead' a player to continue progressing through the game. It could also help newbies in the way that, as they earn these achievements they could earn hbs or pointed horses or whatever you wanted to put as the 'reward'. Just a thought. :)
Main account 40723 -
I like that idea about the achievements!
-
I'm looking forward to tomorrow! Training and showing day!
I've also started buying foals to keep now as there are no pointed horses in my price range and I feel a few points are better than none! -
Well honestly I was only able to find two really nice pointed horses, as most are bought relatively quickly and when you run out of hbs buying the best pointed horses that you can find, you're stuck waiting for another week. I missed most the show horse dump, but I'm hoping maybe tomorrow I can find one or two that has at least a few points, so we'll see how this goes!
-
Hi Ammit,
I am too having the same issue as @WhiskeyBreath, its terribly hard to get good show horses from auction in different timezones. The only reason I got my one I did get from Auction is because it's 18yrs old.
The rest I bought from normal sales which doesn't have many cheap show horses. -
Im also agreeing that it's really slow.. 5k a week is only enough to buy 1 foundation rescue horse a week until the show bonus gets up there a bit.. which when we push for bewer players to get show ponies makes its really hard for them to bot get bored.. pointed horses in auction can be hard to win for a decent price (in the average auction) and on the public sales board they they go for heaps or get snapped up quickly.
I think i only got 1 or 2 of dark stars horses.. and my show bonus is about 400hb a day i think..
Its great that the foundation rescue now trains and shows horses! Ive bought alot from there that only had under 40 points and are now getting close to the 100 point mark so that's fantastic and a great option for newer players.
The big problem with not getting bored is as a new player is running out of hb so easily even if you are being careful as 5k really isnt much when the minmum horses are mostly 2500hb..Breeding liver chestnut drafts that carry snowflake and kp.
Also breeder of mushroom, watercolour, chinchilla, splash m, wrong warp and thunderstruck.
Horses generally always available.

But 55k for a horse that will pass in a few months and can't be bred?
I understand they want the horse but they are just throwing their money away :o
I'm sure each of those horses could have sold for 7500-10000 hbs Max if they didn't bid up so high so quick.
Not saying there is anything wrong with it, just not a particularly smart investment :P

I find what Paradise said is true. One horse jumped from 3400 to 55 k. That is crazy. I did manage to get 2 of the 3 I was bidding on. I had like 8k to work with and I only have a little over 400hbs now.

I'm gonna take a leap and say 55500 was probably supposed to be 5550 or 5500 and Appleboots is kicking herself right now. There is no reason for her to pay that much, she isn't even in the contest.

Im not playing this account as much as when the contest first started. There's too much of a point gap from the show horses and what's usually available for normal play @-)
-
Very true that vould of been a mistake.
-
I've been bumping up the prices due to time zone differences as I can't stay on to bid. If you were in the contest 50k would make sense if you could afford it as it had 1200 points and currently those with 100 points are going for at least 5k and so if you add it up like that it works out as a good price and only takes up one stall.
-
Since the person who bumped up the prices was OUTBID on all those horses then, ya they were worth those prices. They are worth what people will pay folks.

I really miss my upgrades. Lol esp my bid tracker and auto show and train. I kinda gave up on auctions just because they are going so high. I am getting alot if younger stock that should be good show horses. But they won't gain enough by April. People need to realize what nice young horses are not being bought and could have really high points if you give them time

Why am I not even on the list? I realise I suck at this, but I am at 239 which is better than nothing and should show on the list

Very true. They are worth what people are willing to pay for them. In order for the contest to be fair I am not sure if spending real money on it is helping. I know for me I can't afford to buy money for this game. I have done it on my main account once to get Nexus.
Realistically I don't see anyone spending real money on the game until at 4 months in to see if they really like it. Buying the money puts a lot of contest accounts who are trying to play fairly at a disadvantage. Of course you can jump those prices up like crazy like that.
I am just wondering how you are getting any real information on the contest. Realistically I don't see me winning the stallion. I am not sure if I will even get into the top 10. I know for me I am trying to give you some kind of real result that I can. Different time zones do play in this as well.
I know for me I am off to a better start than I was when I started with my main account. I am close to 1000hbs per show bonus. It took me 2 months on my main account I think to get to a 1000. I am playing differently. I am mostly picking up show horses and not breeding stock. -
Ok, staid up way too late last night and had an idea come to me. Now I know in raw form it is entirely undoable, would wreak havok on servers, would be overkill for what is needed, and I don' know what else, but possibly it could be modified and narrowed down a bit?
So problem 1: new players have difficulty getting anywhere, especially free accounts.
Problem 2: They can't afford enough pointed show horses, and making them sky rocket in price is going to make them run out of money sooner. The only way my contest account is affording any is through creation breeding and dumping
Problem 3: the number of horses players are destroying in auction.
Problem 4: the fact that these newer players are competing with existing players for the points, and the barns with more prices are going to be the ones to get them
Problem 5: Available to adopt is a great program, but there is only so much 2 show horses can do, and they are usually older meaning in a few months the player has lost the benefit
Idea: Instead of taking horses that aren't bid on in auction out of the game, they can go to an account that trains and shows them. Yes, many of the horses with points now are being snapped up, but as hidden said, the younger horses shouldn't be underestimated. I see so many bred perfect foundations who wouldn't go to the foundation rescue, and young horses who had good show pony potential go through the auction noticed it isn't even funny. For a few months when I was crammed with barn space and saving for gmts I was sending foals with up to 11+ pt scores to auction and none of them were ever bid on. Send such horses to an account that will raise them into show ponies and then have it so only newer and free accounts can buy them for really cheep, like 50hbs so a newer player can get enough show horses to get a large enough show bonus to be worth enough that they don't go into the breed and dump strategy to be able to afford show horses (or anything else) and then have the difficulty of breeding and dumping making it so they a reluctant to get show hoses because that would take up stalls for breeding and dumping. Bypassing that stage altogether will be the best thing to get people to go towards show ponies. -
In order for the contest to be fair I am not sure if spending real money on it is helping.
Not one person has spent real money on a contest account.
I already have a plan in works for new players getting horses. You guys don't need to worry about that.

Foundation rescue already trains and shows for foundations. This game was never meant (I don't think - correct me if I am wrong) as a "get everything you want" quick game. It's about the long haul. I have had fun building up and having something to work for. At the moment having this contest has made it harder for newbies to find pointed show horses - it was a lot easier last month :D and when the contest is over I am sure it will go back to before and pointed horses will be back for sale. Maybe not really big ones but middle ones that you can watch get better!
Having a chat for newbies to go to pick up some pointed horses (paying as appropriate) where only they can pick up could be a way to go. I know AtA does this and it is great but perhaps they could do a small sale once/week for people to pick up a few (if they are newbies!). I don't know how AtA is doing for donations. -
Sorry Ammit I was thinking that based on the price of what some horses are going for. I forget to take into account sometimes that older barns will pickup in the auctions as well.

SOOO Frustrated. I know I entered. I even saw my contest account in the Ïn the Discussion"and I cannot find it now.
I'm closing this account and auctioning all the horses (not that many, but it's become pointless to me :( )
