Cute little mustang at the BLM
I am loving all the little black flecks splattered through this guy's white markings, but what could be causing it? I've never seen it before. I have seen the roaned out spots on tobianos, but this guy doesn't look tobiano. -
Oh, man. I love this guy! I'm most inclined to same somatic mutation because I have never seen anything like it before--maybe a couple spots, but not in the entire white areas.ID# 25784 Home of quality Artylian Drafts & Cobs

I agree with Dark Star, he doesn't look tobiano and I've only ever seen the cat tracks on tobys.ID# 25784 Home of quality Artylian Drafts & Cobs

I have NO experience with horse colours in real life, but he reminds me of what I get when you have frame and w2 cross in the game!

The white never crosses the centerline of his back, he also doesn't have 4 white feet, making tobiano unlikely.Thanked by 1Ammit

Totally didn't click in to the lack of white on his legs :P●▬▬▬▬▬▬๑۩۩๑▬▬▬▬▬▬▬●

I've seen similar markings in some south American horses. I'm not certain of the genetics though.#28036

Yeh he looks frame, the spotting is interesting though, belton spotting?

I live in Hawaii Bourbon. I have adopted a mustang, had it gentled with some friends and shipped it out here before but it was not an easy process, and it was not a horse in Utah. Not to mention since it's an auction the horse will likely go for 3-5 thousand, rather than $125. Otherwise I did consider it. He is put together pretty well, a nice thick boy. Though I do prefer a slightly more refined head, I think that one could grow on me.Thanked by 1Amgr1992

Belton spotting on frame with splash? The coloring reminds me of some Nigerian Dwarf goats I have seen : )Thanked by 1KintaraContest

It does look reminiscent of Overo/Frame to me too...could Sabino make the little spots?
The best BLM mustang I ever know was a big Roman nosed flea bitten gray who was the steadiest, wisest teenaged boy’s horse known to man. Jesse would take him to clinics with big time ex-Olympians and they would all tell him he should get a nicer horse and then that big heavy headed boy would just fly around a cross country course like he was out for a Sunday stroll. I’ve had lots of affection for the heavier headed guys since then. -
It's called Belton pattern, here is a pic and a link to the genetic info :)

Unfortunately dark star I've seen these horses go for cheap. I wish I could adopt my mustang sooner than later but that's not feasible right now. Many of the horses I've watched in their auction house have gone for under 500 since they are in trained and in touched. I want to get one of their "three strikes" mustang. They have either been passed over in auction three times, refused at purchase three times, been returned at "untrainable" or "dangerous", or deemed too old. Those horses are almost all off the range not born at facility, and I think they deserve a chance too.

I have adopted a mustang 5 years ago, and I have close friends who have been gentling them for 20+ years. This one, due to it's young age, fancy color and generally nice build will likely be one of the high bids in the auction. It's picture has also been circulating the Mustang boards/communities so hopefully it will get adopted by someone who knows how to deal with mustangs. I have owned more than one mustang, and frankly, I wouldn't pay more than $125 for one. Mostly because you don't have to, and also because it's a roll of the dice as to whether or not the horse is going to work out. Many mustangs adapt to domestic life just fine, but not all do, and like any horse you can't ride before you buy, there is always the chance that it won't be a good fit for you.
I had to find a new home for the mustang I adopted. She was a good horse, soft and sensitive, handled like a sports car, but she needed more than a few rides a week. She needed a job where she worked out her energy, or it turned into nervous reactiveness and bolting. She is now a cattle horse on Maui and loves every minute of it.
If you have never adopted before I highly suggest working with someone who is knowledgeable, or getting one from one of the programs, Either the prison programs, or TIP, or the makeovers. Most of the horses who are returned were adopted by well intentioned folks who got in over their heads, and even 25 years of experience with tame horses didn't prepare me to deal with a feral one. I was successful because I had experienced help. -
We had a Mustang from Extreme Mustang Makeover for a while. He was one of 9 horses we rescued and the only one we were able to track down history, due to his freezebrand. His trainer made him dangerous to ride, he's the only horse that's ever thrown or kicked me. After we rehabbed him, he went to a different trainer to undo the mess the first one did. He's now a western pleasure show horse for a teen. Anyway, I definitely suggest seeing if you can interact with the horse before buying, if you go through a program or makeover. This horse looked good at the makeover but if you did one thing different than the original trainer, it was an unpredictable experience trying to ride.#28036

Yeah, The prison programs or TIP (Trainer's incentive program) are a better way to go than the makeovers. I mean, I like the makeovers for the attention they have brought to mustangs, but they also encourage shortcuts and there is only so much you can do in 90 days. Without the pressure to move the horse fast the other two programs result in a better trained animal. Honestly, if I was going to do it again, and I might, I would likely keep the horse in Oregon at my friends place, with them training it, for the entire first year.

Dark Star I went to school for horses. I worked with a mustang that had been deemed untrainable before I was born and he was trained and became my favorite horse. I've actually worked with 2 mustangs. The second being my training horse at the school. I know what I've got coming to me when I can adopt! And to be completely truthful I can't wait. I'll be going back to school within the next two years, I had to leave because I was run over by an arabian mare whom I adore and sorely miss. Now it's getting out of debt collections so I can actually get the loans I need to go back, I plan on getting my mustang about 3-6 months before I go so I can have the experienced teachers that can guide me if I need it. :)
