Thursday night we had to euthanize one of our beloved Danes. As a vet tech and someone who knows what to expect with Danes it hits me harder knowing I couldn’t help him more. Our 6yr old boy Rafal had his stomach flip and sill with air (GDV). This is a coming thing in Danes and I have so much stuff on hand and have taken so many steps to help eliminate this for them. I am heart broken beyond belief and sometimes find myself asking why and what could I have done differently. I do know that he’s in less pain and running free with our female Athena (his daughter). For now we have our other 2 Danes to focus on and plan to open our hearts and home in the future to another Dane. If you have a giant breed please make yourself familiar with what GDV is. It’s a horrible things to have to deal with :(

:O oh, Raintree, that's horrible! I'm so sorry. :((

So sorry for your loss! I was a vet tech for 15 years, I have seen a few dogs go down this way and it is heartbreaking. Sometimes you do everything right and nature still says nope.Fine appaloosa riding horses, Axiom blue and green, ice 1, ice 2, and ice 8

So sorry to hear about your pup. :( It's so hard with those giant deep-chested breeds and bloat, poor kiddo.
Did your boy ever have a pexy done? If not something to consider with your next dane. <3ID: 40723 -
I'm sorry you have lost Rafal. It's always rough to lose our animal companions.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

@Ren we did not have the pexy done because we got him after he became a retired breeder and show dog. He was 6yrs old. My female Dane Nox just had hers done and my male Dane Odin will have his done this month. I know about the surgery but I had hoped he would be ok.
It’s just hard to see your dog in pain and to make that final decision to ease it. I really wish I would have done it for him but you can’t go back and change things. My Danes from here on out will have done.
Thankyou all for your kind words. It’s very hard not having him here. We lost our female Dane Athena last year and it was his daughter. Now we lost him.
