Rare Genes
-
So do rare genes ever pop in create a horse? Or do they ever pop up randomly by breeding? Or maybe do you have to use herd helper or gen mod?
-
Some Rare genes, like DP, which is necessary to have Liver Chestnuts, will pop up in creates, yes. Brindle is extremely rare, and might turn up in creates, and maaaybe breeding. I think I heard something about it. :P The super special ones like Ice, Satin, Nexus, Sooty+, and some others like Sabino 2 are either Limited Edition or only GMTable. :)
Herd Helpers only give the naturally achievable genes. They're still useful, though, because you can be sure that they'll create something with those genes. :) -
Awesome :) Dp is sooty right? So do you just breed sooty and chestnut?
-
A lot of the 'rare' genes can only be purchased with real money, sadly.
Most other genes can pop up on any create, though! I've had many extra roans, appaloosas, duns, champagnes, and creams! Herd helpers guarantee what they say, but an extra could just pop up on it :). I was recently using the smokey black herd helper and created a smokey black appaloosa.
Since this game is about genetics, it follows the rules of genetics. A horse can only pass on what it has, so you can't just get random genes to pop up in lines. Some genes can hide, like cream on blacks, but the horse will still carry it. As far as I'm aware the only way the game produces gene mutations is just making the horse chimeric/brindle. Two normals can produce a brindle :). -
No DP is different. DP is darker than a homozygous sooty horse.
This guy is homozygous DP and homozygous sooty. He looks black but hes chesnut.

*whistles* he is beautiful. I think I like him better than the satin! Wow! Absolutely gorgeous. Bravo!
-
I got one brindle from my Special HH 'Bring Back The Sun' stallion, and another brindle mare. I also got one brindle from two non brindles, and a two brindles from both brindle parents.
I think DP and sooty are different, but one of the other players would know about that. I know I have several Liver chestnuts from one of my chestnut foundie stallions.
I think some times other rare genes like KP, Ice, Nexus started out paying real cash, and some may still be that way. Not sure which ones though.
I think most of the players with GP have paid real cash for that gene and GMT'ed it. -
did you just get him from create?
-
@PaintsStables links please? :)
-
Sometimes (like for christmas) Ammit (the game creator) will give us "rank special" herd helpers. They have special genes. Like the brindle breakouts. the freaky friday (like my DP stallion that rank special comes out on friday the 13th), shades of pale, heart of the holidays, out with a bang, etc.
And thank you :) if you get the dark flaxen chestnut herd helper create mares and use them and find a homozygous DP stallion that is for stud in the search and you have a chance of getting DP foals :)
Here is a great thread I started on DP asking about examples. It shows a lot of colors with sooty and then with DP. Since DP isnt a testable color you have to learn how to spot it just by looking lol

If you have an upgraded account I can send you a straw or two from my DP stallion :)
-
Hmm. Can I keep straws or do I have to use the right away?
-
If you're at least a Basic upgrade you can use them at all. I don't know if they even have a time limit, but if they do it's pretty long. I think the seller can set an expiration date if they want to.
-
I can set the expiration date for 4 years. I'm pretty sure thats game years not real years lol. so 4 months
-
I'm pming you
-
Before you send it, you can also leave the expiration date blank. I assume that means it never expires, but I don't really know. :P
-
They do expire. Setting an expiry date always shortens their life, but it also gives you a deadline to use the straws instead of them just disappearing from your stash if you don't use them in time.
-
@Grey Woods, here is a link to my brindles.

Grey Woods I didnt get your PM if you send it!
Paints love all your brindles! I still hope to get another whether its a random create or I breed one! Havent been lucky yet! -
@Moonacre, it was a long time before I got one, but it was so exciting when I did. I still try every year to get one from the same pairs. I haven't got a double one from the same pair yet either. Brindle is very random, but you can get it from two non brindles.
-
Yeah I assume it'll take a while before I get one but when I do it will be very exciting! :)
-
I have two brindle girls and a brindle boy I breed every time too hoping for more brindle. Crossing my fingers again this season.
-
@PaintsStables I'm lovin the brindles too!
-
Is line breeding common here? Is it frowned upon?
-
Is line breeding common here? Is it frowned upon?
-
I am not sure how common it is. I try to avoid it just because I like the challenge of trying to mimic in real life where I would personally want to avoid inbreeding. However, I know that people do inbreed/linebreed, and I don't think that it is frowned upon here by most people. If it was a horse I really liked I wouldn't mind a little line breeding.
I don't think there are any distinct advantages or disadvantages to doing it built into the game.SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES

How long do straws last when they don't have an expiration date?
-
Thats actually a question I was going to ask soon. If people line breed/ inbreed. I'm sure it happens but I was wondering if its something like our other unwritten guidelines we follow lol
-
Fj, my understanding is straws naturally last longer than the highest expiration date (4 seasons) but that they eventually expire and disappear from your inventory. I don't know how long they can last though, so I'm trying to use mine in 5 seasons or so.
-
Lovely, I have a straw to a 7th gen stallion and the highest I have is a 3 gen rofl. Guess I'm looking for a 7th gen mare to use it on. I asked for it because I didn't realize they had an life span
-
I'm pretty sure they last indefinitely if no expiration is set. I have some that are actual years old.
As far as line breeding, lots of people do it, especially with limited edition genes (the same as it would be in real life if you had a valuable foundation whose qualities you were trying to reproduce). It's not nearly as frowned upon in the game as breeding unevenly. -

Fj, if you want to go ahead and use that straw soon, I would put either of these girls up for brood next season for you. I had a similar situation where I was given a straw to an amazing sire back at Christmas and had to go buy stock so I could use it! As a result, I've picked up a handful of gen 5 and up girls and just sort of am playing around with them. -
That would be awesome cheers. I know the stallion is a W4 but I think either one of those girls is safe to breed him to.
-
Yep. White 4 is only dangerous with White, so these girls are clear. Remind me at the end of Feb/beginning of March and we will make that happen!Thanked by 1fj1482
