  • Hi I just started this account today, after starting my first account last week. I'm really loving this game, but on my first account I had no idea what I was doing. So creating my foundation horses on this account I found a herd helper with perfect foundations. Well I used all the creates I could on that and a few more from my own herd helper, dun roan splash. I bred 5 mares to my one stud that was a perfect foundation before testing any of them. After testing the grown horses, I wound up with 5/6 being perfect foundations. Then I ran the breeding advice test on the foals and put them and the one 9.5 inconsistent mare up for sale except for one foal, which I kept. He was a 10.10 consistent.
Then my welcome pack money came in so I then found another herd helper for super consistent foundations and used those to make more mares and bred them to my perfect foundation stud, and with no testing other than BA on the mares or foals produced, I put them all up for auction.
I guess what I'm getting around to asking is if this is a good way to start the game? Because what I was running into on my old account was a serious lack of game money. I figured if I kept my perfect foundations for breeding a little later and showing them all the while, say two, three weeks from now, and just made foundations and foals from them for auction, by that time I'd have a decent bankroll to breed what I really want to do. Any advice or thoughts from more experienced players would be appreciated!!
  • You can only tell if a horse is a perfect foundation if their HH says so (RS or PF HH), or if you bought them from the foundation rescue (owner id 13). Other than that, you can only guess at a foundations breedability.

  • I thought 9.9 and Consistent was a perfect foundation? In any case I got three for sure with the HH.
  • I still don't understand what exactly I'm doing on here, but I'll figure it out soon lol.
  • The numbering/consistency is in reference to showing ability, not breeding ability. Breeding advice weeds through breeding abilities. Some foundation horses will not pass. Some foals will not pass. When testing, breeding advice is looking at whether or not the foal is at least as good as their best parent. If they aren't, then they get snipped. Often times they make good show ponies if you have the room for them to hang out in a barn. Everyone has different requirements of their horses to remain intact for breeding. In the grand scheme of things though, the goal is to have fun. Its completely up to your discretion whether or not you want to test your breeding horses at all :) There is definitely a lot to learn. I am learn something nearly every day, and have changed my own breeding program a few times now as I learn more.

  • Oh okay! I put every horse in shows, and I'm now thinking I should only sell the ones that didn't earn me any show points since I've gotten their results back. And maybe test a few to see where they stand. I just really don't want to go broke quickly like I did last time.
  • If you scroll down the Help Me Out section, there was just a thread on showing : How Low Is Too Low for PT. Lots of good info in there on showing. I currently still show everything in my barns, and keep a her of show ponies. My showing bonuses aren't up there yet. Everything takes time, and chances are good you'll go broke a few times before you really get the hang of it. I certainly.did lol

  • The FAQ and the Help Me Out forum are both plethoras of info. I have been checking out the forum when I have time, even going back to old threads, and have learned a ton just from reading through old threads. Its a great community. Everyone is always super helpful, and very willing to share how they got their own barns up and running well, as well as answers to basically every question asked including ideas on how to choose what to keep, how they breed etc.

  • Thanks so much for your help. I reckon I'll study up a bit before I make any big decisions.

  • Another thing, Rola, especially when you’re just starting out, is that it’s totally ok to just use Breeding Advice and not worry about any of the paid testing for a while. Also, you can save yourself 500hbs per foal if you breed in the pasture instead of the barn.

Making money in the game is super hard when you’re just starting out and we all feel your pain! Make sure you apply to Available to Adopt and get a couple of show ponies for your herd. Also, keep an eye on the sales boards to pick up high PT or high point horsrs that are being discarded cheap. Learn to use the Search Horses Page really well—mastering this resource will really help you out later. Also it’s a great way to look at all the different base colors and patterns so you get an idea of what you might breed for once you have a little stash of cash.

Please note, if you’re looking at purchasing anything, that any horse currently 17 years old or older may “age out” of the game (die) at the end of this month. They may not, some horses make it well into their 20s, but as a new player with a limited bank roll, buying horses that might die in a few days is super risky!

  • Thank you Cheers! I've been doing the pasture breeding, I didn't even realize I could breed them in the barn, lucky me! I appreciate all yours and everyones advice. I appreciate it all and feel like I may have a little bit more understanding about what I want to do game wise, which is mainly have fun, and I'm already doing that! I've about ran myself broke already, but I have a few horses in auction so I'm not too worried about it. The hbs I get today I'm going to sit on til Sundays sale and look for a few higher point horses to help me out.

  • I buy herd helper mares, breed then in the pasture then sell them along with the foals to get a steady income often. I started with 2 mares now I'm up to 9 and I recently brought in 40k by doing this. It's a decent way and I use my other barn to keep my showers and project horses
