Building a Show String to Help With Money (need hbs, need advice!)
  • I think I'm confused, so I'm going to ask this in the hopes someone can help. I'm running into money troubles (not making enough show bonus because I'm new).

I found Bandit's suggestion to create mares, breed them untested, and sell all mares and foals at auction (still untested). Now, I've run PI scores and Breeding Advice on the foals (I know, the PI eats into the profit) because I used a top notch producer stud and a perfect foundation stud with several TNP and PF mares. But, several of the foals came out of BA altered. I'm wondering if it might be worth keeping anything with a PI score over 10, because altered horses make better show horses? I guess that's my question - do altered horses make better showers and should I keep things that don't pass BA?

I've also scored as many Top Notch Producers, Perfect Foundation and Exceptional Show creates as I can, and I'm wondering if I should consider keeping the TNP and PF mares. I of course am keeping all the ESH.
  • When I first started my show herd I did this, breed untested mares and sold the mares and foals at auction after testing the foals for PT. Kept everything above 10PT. I've got a pretty descent show herd going now. Also altering a horse does make them perform better.
  • The PF mares will have perfect traini g ability, so should be decent show horses. The TNP mares are kind of a crap shoot. They might be good showers or they might not. Personally, I would create, breed and auction as many random create mares as you have money/space for. If you don't already have a basic upgrade, you could potentially earn enough to get one in a few weeks (depending how much money/space you start with). If you already have a basic, you can do this to earn enough to get a couple big barns and then stuff those full of altered show horses.

  • @Stella19 Join the "Dun Breeders" chat. Send me a message when you have. :)
  • Keep your altered foals for the show barn, especially if they are over 10 PT and consistent (although inconsistent horses can be good money makers as well). I think I have read 3 show horses per breeder is a good rule of thumb to fund your breeding program.
  • This whole thread has been really helpful! Thanks guys :D

  • If you don't want to / don't have room to keep the PFs, TNPs, etc. you can always sell them to other players. Most people are always looking to buy them, and will often pay a little over create price for them.
  • I just joined in November. I still don't have a very large show string. This month was my first month with a Basic up grade. I went over board testing. So now I am at the point where I am creating to sell again. I am not testing anything from the random creates. Only the herd helpers. And keeping altered Foals with a good PT score. You will get there just be patient.
