Show Horse Question: Keep or Sell?
  • I got a great deal on this young show horse, but... she is not very gifted in the "earning points" department. At what point should I cut my losses and sell her? I am not helping matters any by forgetting to train some weeks! Oops.

I have very large premium accounts, and this is my "try to play the hard way" free account. On my big stable, I would just keep showing her, but my free account barn is very tiny right now, so every stall really counts!

Would you hang on to this mare for a few more months, or let her go to auction and try again with a different horse?

Before you point out the obvious: I know I also SHOULD sell more of my RS, replace them with show horses, and get a basic upgrade with my sales profits if I want to make more money faster. I am still coming to terms with letting so many RS I like go for the good of the account.
  • She's only just turned 2 this month, and as a foal she was only going to earn half points. If you train her she will move up to a better class and so hopefully earn a bit more.
So personally I would keep her for a bit longer to see.

  • You've answered your own questions :) You know she will have the potential to be great. I found that it helps to have a specific goal with a second account. With this account (Chilli) I just breed red-based horses and started with PFs and worked my way up from scratch. It took me 2 months to purchase a basic upgrade and then another 4 months after that to be at an ok level. But now I find this account better than my main (Dinascar) who had no real goal. She does now ;) And good luck!

  • With a 10.8 PT, she's going to go bouncing up the Level/Grade ladder rather quickly, scarcely pausing to show more than once at any one of them. Every time you train her, she'll add about 9 points to her show score. There is approximately a 10 point show score spread in every Level/Grade (ex. 2L where she is now.) Wait and see where she levels off before you give up on her as a money-maker.

  • Thanks, everyone! I was just worried based on her show history of zero scores. However, apparently, when I finally remember to train her AFTER entering her in shows, she does really well : P

I will hang on to her for a few more weeks and see how she shows at higher levels. More importantly, I will see if I can remember to train her each week!

  • When determining whether a show horse is good or not you really can’t tell until they’re older.

Higher PT horses will shoot through the lower levels and sort of flounder about until they find their footing.

Lower PT horses may not train up to the higher levels but tend to stick in the lower levels a bit longer before moving up which is why a wide range of PT scores is ideal when starting out.

The lower PT will cover your show bonus a bit until your higher PT horses find their footing and start earning serious points.

When I used to cull I’d never even look at a show horse until it had leveled off. Then I would just check to see if it was placing in a decent spot (all but the last place horse earns points) and that it had a good number of overall points to add to my bonus. If I really needed a stall I’d cull the last overall point earners from each age group starting at the oldest and working my way down to the younger horses but would stop between 9 & 10.

Of course now my show herd earns its keep without issue so I keep everything because by the time I fill the latest 1000stall show barn the horses in it (and the others) have earned enough hbs to buy another 1000stall barn so I no longer need to micromanage my show herd to keep it in line.
