  • I've been a bit dis enthused lately with my 'Our' prefix on my ponies' names. It doesn't fit well with a lot of the names and seems sort of dumb to me. I want to change it but that's quite the task and I don't know what I would change to. Should I just keep it?

  • I use ZsF as a prefix to my lined horses and "of ZsF" on foundations; this is how you kennel name dogs lol and it works well. I also name most of my horses within a theme, but sometimes certain horses need a special something-different name. I don't think you have to change all the names, but maybe start a new line/lines with a different theme?

  • In the past few days I've been going through and renaming all my horses with a number according to their generation (1 for foundations, 2 for second gens, ect.) and a letter for their paper level (C, B, ect.) So before all the names of my intact horses, they have prefixes like 1C, 2B, 3A, ect. All my show horses say CWS in front of their names. Previously I had my breeders with just the numbers for generation and not paper level (1G, 2G, ect.) but recently I've been thinking that it would be nice to have the paper level in the name. So I'm tackling it - it is a big project but gives me something to do when I'm bored.

  • I am going through and changing the names of all my intact horses to be generation then paper level. It will take quite a while. Up until now I have used the prefix RW for all of my horses.
  • I tried to do that ages ago, and it just got to be too much work. The Tattoos work better, in my opinion.

  • I did something similar when I first started. I had a prefix, then name, then a roman numeral suffix to indicate generation. I eventually switched to the generation number prefix, then name, then letter suffixes for genes, and I preferred that method just because it made searching through lists easier. The show horses still have a prefix of RC so they appear last in my lists. I am now in the midst of a third renovation for breeding stock, with a generation number/line letter prefix, then name, and letter gene suffix.
  • I decided to change my barn name entirely and I'm now changing them to have Bellwether at the start of their name.

  • I used to name by generation, but it was a huge hassle naming all the mares. Eventually I stopped breeding by generation and now I only label my studs by era. I only breed one "generation" per era. I still don't name the mares, I just handle them in chunks by era. So all the 5 Era mares go in one barn, and eventually one pasture. It works so far, and saves lots on time on naming.

I still name my studs. Mostly to differentiate them. My studs are really the only horses I keep track of on an individual basis.
  • I use a suffix on my horses that tells me their color, patterns, Special genes and their generation. It means I have to name all of my breeding horses. It also means I can tell from a barn what pasture my horses belong in without having to search for my tattoos or generation numbers. This makes moving horses in and out of pastures really easy! But, it’s super time consuming and it means my horse names can’t be too long because the suffix is important. I also keep running into issues because I end up using the same letters for different genes. Like D at the very beginning of a suffix means the horse had DP, but if it comes a letter or so in, it means the horse is dun. Capital M means the horse has Kit M, little m means they have Macchiato....I confuse myself sometimes!
