Straws vs Public/Private breeding
-
Are there any "benefits" choosing one over the other?
-
I'm interested in knowing more about this myself!
-
No, there really isn't any benefits from any of the options, at least not in the quality of the foals produced.
However, private or in-house breeding does not make your horse publicly available in a search for horses up for public stud and brood. So if you want to keep a line exclusive, you will want to do all your breeding for it private.
The only method of breeding that has any effect on the quality of foals is by using a pasture and making sure your mares there have been in it at least 30 days for the maximum pasture benefit. Each day a mare stays in a pasture, up to 30, a little more of the lower extension of possible breeding ability for the foal gets hidden. This means that she will contributing breeding ability from the higher end of her possible range. Stallions, however, contribute from their whole range of possible breeding ability input, no matter how long they've been in pasture.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Straws a lot more expensive but they allow you to breed to horses you would otherwise not have access to and use breedings even long after a horse is dead.
