Snowflake?
  • I see that snowflake apps are popular, and I am interested in perhaps breeding some eventually if I’m lucky. But what letters represent the snowflake gene?

  • Snowflake is a non testable gene. In the GMT Lab or on Modified horses it shows up as "?"
It is a recessive gene and required 2 copies to express itself.
The horse also needs to be at least het for Appaloosa Gene (LP)
Foundation Creates can be het or hom snowflake though most people never know unless the horse is hom snow het appy or they have bred a horse to a hom snow.

  • Well I’m trying to see if the foal I got out a hom snowflake stallion has the gene at all. But she wasn’t out of an appy mare so I don’t think she does. Lol

  • Any foal with a homozygous snowflake app parent has to be at least heterozygous snowflake. It is also possible for a non-app horse to carry snowflake. There have been several such foundations discovered when they produced homozygous snowflake foals, although random snowflake carriers (with or without app) are fairly rare. The way to be sure if a horse is a homozygous snowflake app (as opposed to a heterozygous snowflake carrier) if you can't tell by looking, is to try to enter it in the snowflake breeders club (once Ammit has the clubs open again). Your foal doesn't appear to be homozygous, but the amount of white makes it a little hard to be sure.

  • Thank you! I wasn’t sure if snowflake carried all the time of only one parent has the gene. Even if she is heterozygous that’s at least a start for me! Thank you!
