If a horse is up for 1 hb...
  • ... chances are good that its owner just set it up for breeding so that they could breed to it themselves, since that's the way you have to hand breed. You might want to ask whether they meant to put the horse up before you breed to it.

I was doing some last-minute breeding tonight and as I set a mare up for 1 hb so I could breed, someone stealthed in and bred her (a very well bred 3rd gen from an exceptional "B" line) to a foundation stallion. That kinda bothers me because it's going to mess up her papering and whatnot.

    Please don't do that.
  • Honestly, I always use my pastures if I'm breeding my mares to my studs(even it's just one mare). Putting a horse up for public is just that. It's available to the public. It's just too risky for me(personally) to let a stud/mare that I'm planning to use for myself be available for the public. Ammit has always said to not place horses for public breeding if you don't want others to get to them or feel like others won't use them responsibly.. The only way I can see them being at fault is if you renamed the horse " DO NOT BREED/USE " or something similar because not everyone reads the notes. Even then there's still the possibility that someone will just do it anyway because it's up for 1hb, it's something they're looking for, etc.

    Sorry that happened. =((
  • Doesn't that money go back to you though? So if you put a horse up for like, 20k, won't it still only cost you 1k to breed them because you'd get that 20k back? Correct me if I'm wrong.
  • Dark Mist that is my understanding. Like Sandy I don't hand breed anymore, I always use a pasture. I just pick one that isn't full and has already been bred... Hate this happened to you Abbey! But I have thought an alternative if I'm really only need to breed one mare would be to put her and him up for as many hbs as I can afford to reduce the chance that this might happen.
  • I always put them up as high as I can afford when Im breeding for myself. Far as I know, most people use 99999 or 250000 to avoid other people using their stock.

Alot of people are working on "free for all" lines, who are put up for 1 hb.

  • Wow, what mare was it

  • I'm sorry that happened to you, Abbey. Like Maribo, my strategy is usually to use the highest price I can afford when hand breeding, especially since many of the stallions I put up for public stud are priced at 1hb.

  • I also am sorry that happened to you Abbey. I had it happen to me when I reduced my prices on my mares a couple of months ago. It did lower her paper rating for a time, because someone bred a foundation to her. But her papering did go back up after a while. I had the same thing happen with my stallions this season, I did ask that they geld or spay and use offspring as show horses, and all but one has done that request.
  • It's not a huge deal, and I realize public is public. I mostly use pastures too, but occasionally do a little bit of hand breeding. I do wish there was a way to do it without risking someone else breeding to your horse.

What I could afford last night was something like 8k ... that probably would have been enough of a deterrent, though. Thanks for input guys.
  • Gahh that stinks. Sorry that happened.

I never even thought of that, that you paying your own stud/brood fee would go back to you lol. I feel like a dummy
  • Ah, I've been in that position a time or two, Abbey, but not since the showing bonus was instituted. Of course, I do have a hoarding problem. *G*

  • That is a bummer! I usually use pastures for all of my in house breeding as well. Lesson learned I guess...
