I have line naming block
-
I've been working on getting a line together to create a line I think will really be cool looking when I'm done. I'm at the point now that I have enough foundations together that I normally set up a pasture, name the line, and create a tattoo but I have hit a road block. I have nothing. I need to get the wheels turning. How do you all come up with names for your lines?Thanked by 1PaintsStables

I think of random things i like or what my horses look likeLife is Special live it to your fullestThanked by 1PaintsStables

That's one thing I'm pretty unimaginative about... I don't have very clearly defined "lines" anyway, but the only one I've actually named is my Dreamcatcher appaloosas.Thanked by 1PaintsStables

I usually take it from the stallion's name. But my tattoos will be for specific genes except my barn tattoo I think. Makes it easier to sort kids, especially when someone puts out a call for a specific kind of horse!Thanked by 1PaintsStables

I renamed three of my tattoos
Baya Satin is now σατέν translating to Satin
Baya nexus is now Starry Παιδί translating to Starry Child
Baya KP is now Συννεφιά translating to Cloudy Sky
All the translations are in greekLife is Special live it to your fullestThanked by 1PaintsStables -
Well, the stallion is a foundation create that I never named lol so that idea is out the window, though I really should name him. I'm thinking about a play on words and maybe use the name of a famous horse with the same color base like Phenomenally Authentic. That seems awfully long though.Thanked by 1PaintsStables

I have trouble thinking of names. Its rare that I think of one that I really like but my favorites usually have the better names in my opinion. I usually just go random. I'll go off of the parents names. Some are harder than others. I do quick google searches to see things that relate to something in the sires name. Foundations of course are the hardest because youve gotta think of those yourself lol. A lot of the time when I'm going through and naming foals or creates and don't feel like thinking a whole bunch I just see random things on the tv or hear something in a song or something and thats what they end up being named lol. Try to get some inspiration by listening to music. Or maybe pick a favorite movie or show of yours and create a theme based off of that. I do like Phenomenally Authentic though.Thanked by 1PaintsStables

A lot of my foundations have really uninspired names. There is a whole batch of red dun mares named for red things in my living room I could see when I created them. For foals I often Google for synonyms of the Dad's name. And with s lot of Abbey's mares I've bought I have to google what their name means in the first place and then name the foals from that....but I end up with cool Welsh or Elvish or Mandarin names as a result!Thanked by 1PaintsStables

I will say I like 2 word names, especially for stallions. That way you have more to play with. Phenomenally Authentic is awesome, but I agree, a bit unwieldy. Storm Cat is much easier to work with...Thanked by 1PaintsStables

Thesaurus, Antonyms and synonyms for anything I happen to think about or hear some where. My unicorn horses for example, have chimerical, comical, and mythical. That is where I found those. Or like some others, I use different languages for the same color, like in my buckskin line.

It's 6:43am here right now and I was doing a thesaurus search for words and sure enough it hit me. I like it so much it will probably be the name to the stallion who is lucky enough to be used for my 2nd Gen. "Riddle Me This" because I'm kind of keeping the genes involved under wraps, not that a few of you couldn't make an educated guess once you see them, and one of the genes I want to add you can't test for to begin with so this line wont be easy :) Thank you everyone. The ideas were awesome and paid off.Thanked by 1PaintsStables

LOL, that's hilarious that you're googling my names. I google to make them (and I also sometimes have to google them to remember what they mean), or often use the translate function on my phone. So if I have sire with a Spanish name and dam named Cloud something, I'll use the translator to find out the Spanish word for cloud or whatever. I use the thesaurus a bunch too. I like to have themes on my stallions, like a language their foals' names are in, or songs by a particular artist, or space themed names or geology themed names.Thanked by 1PaintsStables

I didn't even realize there were horses with this name already lol. I see one is a boy you bred Abbey lol

Im wanting to make a grey line. What should i name itLife is Special live it to your fullest

You could name it "Two for One" after the old myth that if you pull a gray hair two will grow back in its place :)

Almost all of my foundations are rank specials so I tried to name them something that related to the rank special title. For example my Silver Pocket Watch Stud: Cogsworth http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=333296 Any other foundations I just name randomly based on a whim.
Lined babies I use google a lot to help me come up with something that is related to both parents. (Sometimes I fail and go with something related to one parent's name but I try really hard to incorporate both). For example:

This boy's Dam has Cheers in her name, which reminded me of the old TV show with the bar called Cheers. His sire's name I googled to find out it's a potion from the Harry Potter world. So I googled the name of all of the taverns/pubs/bars that show up in Harry Potter and the Three Broomsticks was the name I liked best. He almost got named the Leaky Cauldron but Three Broomsticks sounded a little more regal. :)

This gal her sire is named The Outlaw and her dam The Siren. Sirens are a sea monster/creature that lured pirates and sailors to their deaths and pirates are the outlaws of the sea so she got Pirate in her name.
Some of them are probably a stretch as to how I came up with the name that matches both, but it works for me. It's a fun process to name I think.SALVISTAR PERFORMANCE HORSES
