Australia Day Giveaway
  • So, it's Australia Day! This is a national holiday, much like the 4th of July in the US. Since I love love love living Down Under, I am giving away 1 straw or free breeding from any stallion on this list that isn't marked as In House Only to everyone who posts a fact, meme, picture or article about Australia. This is open until game rollover tomorrow (when the 26th becomes the 27th).

Please post your user ID, whether you want a straw or a breeding and the name of the stallion you choose! I have included 2 year old stallions on the list so obviously you won't get those til next season. Same if you ask for a breeding to one of my foundations that has 50 foals from this season.

Please breed evenly. Foals from this competition must be GA/MA/SAT tested. Colts must be papered if you are upgraded. Gen 2 colts must paper B. Other colts must paper as well as or better than their sires. Intact foals are not guaranteed.

  • I'm not sure if this counts as an Australian fact but kangaroo meat is actually healthier for you than beef. It has a 1-2% fat content :D If that doesn't count I'll hunt up another one but I'd love a breeding to this guy http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=304981 My id is 4159

  • "House is a multi-venue performing arts centre in Sydney, Australia, identified as one of the 20th century's most distinctive buildings.

Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, the building was formally opened on 20 October 1973 after a gestation beginning with Utzon's 1957 selection as winner of an international design competition. The government of New South Wales, led by the premier, Joseph Cahill, authorised work to begin in 1958 with Utzon directing construction. The government's decision to build Utzon's design is often overshadowed by circumstances that followed, including cost and scheduling overruns as well as the architect's ultimate resignation.

The Sydney Opera House became a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 28 June 2007.

The building and its surrounds occupy the whole of Bennelong Point in Sydney Harbour, between Sydney Cove and Farm Cove, adjacent to the Sydney central business district and the Royal Botanic Gardens, and close by the Sydney Harbour Bridge."

  • That counts! Please post your ID number for me. I'm making a list, especially for the Feb breedings!

Also, kangaroo meat is delicious but can be quite full of connective tissue and requires either long, low slow cooking or fast high heat searing or else it goes tough. I love kangaroo chili!
  • My daughter was reading over my shoulder and recently learned this in our homeschooling and said I should post it as a fact.
Rabbits are an introduced species to Australia. They were originally released so European settlers could hunt them and have a small feel of home around 1788. Since then the introduced species has taken off and done some real damage including but not limited to soil erosion and decimation of plant and crops leaving local wildlife with little to no food to eat. Attempts to eradicate rabbits has been unsuccessful. Even the release of the Myxoma virus has not helped lower the numbers. Think twice before you release a non-native species. It only took 24 rabbits to leave Australia with the current problem.
  • The opera house is amazing! The acoustics there are insane (as they should be!). Baya, Snow is in house only. Please pick someone else.
  • Australia is the home to the most beautiful opals you could ever find and one of these days I would love to go opal hunting there.

    And I hate flying!
  • Fj, rabbits are a huge problem and it's illegal to keep them as pets in Queensland. Foxes, camels, buffalo, pigs and cane toads are other introduced species doing variable damage to the environment and native fauna. Please pick a stallion for me!
  • How about rivendell?

  • Sooo... does this count? Cause it made me giggle

    7731 is my ID :)
  • Yay! I edited my first post. Yeah that's what I've heard as well. I've always wanted to try it, mostly because I've tried pretty much everything else! I love making soups/stews so I'd have no problem waiting around for some yummy kangaroo dishes.
  • Terri, I've been to Coober Pedy where they mine white opals and live underground because it gets too hot! Amazing. But Queensland Boulder opal is my favorite form of the gem. Please pick a stallion!
  • Moon, that made me laugh too, especially since the Hawks are on snow! Pick a stallion and I will get you set!
  • I would love a straw from http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=304674

I think it is awesome that you have been there, it has always been a dream of mine
    Thanked by 1Cheers
  • If I could get a straw from Red King :)
    Thanked by 1Cheers
  • Oops sorry lol Starry Knights is in house only right?
If so, then Amortentia Z :)
  • FJ, I actually remember that about about the Rabbits! I think on some island somewhere, an entire species of ground-nesting birds was discovered and wiped out by a housecat!
And waitaminute Cheers, I though camels were indigenous to Australia? In fact, I thought they originated there?

This is going to be so fun!
...Except going through pictures on Google has made me realize (again) how much of it wants to kill you. :P
#3692, I can use a straw thanks, and I'd like one from Lupine Jewel. :D

  • Moon, do you want a straw or a breeding?
  • Rose, camels are middle eastern/African/Asian by origin but we now actually export a lot of camels to the Middle East because they do so well here. I rode a racing camel on a 5 day trek through the Simpson desert several years ago. If you think riding a feisty horse is interesting, try a feisty racing camel trying to buck you off! Legs went on to come second in his race the next week.

And finally, the first picture is disturbingly un-photoshopped but the one of the spider eating the green tree snake is NOT real! Thank freaking god....go looking for the pics of the olive Python eating the croc. Those are scary.
  • Australia was the second country in the world to allow women to vote (New Zealand was first).
    Pretty cool for us ladies:-)

  • image this is awesome!! I would like a straw from red king please. Id 3394

  • Australia has over 750 different reptile species, more than any other country in the world. The large variety includes the Blue-tongued skinks. Blue-tongued skinks, also called Blue-tongue for short, are members of the lizard family and, as the name suggests, have blue tongues! The blue can be used as a bluff-warning to potential predators that they won't be tasty. So cool! :P

    Could I have a straw from http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=300965 ?

  • Oooh, y'know what, I got it mixed up, you're right. Camels actually originated in the Americas, not Australia.
Oh, also, it's Robert Burns' Birthday on your side of the world. :D

  • Wow. That's awesome. We need to adapt that here. Lol I hate drawn out political crap. Lol
  • This is an awesome idea btw. Cool facts
  • My husband's Grandma immigrated to the U.S. from Perth, Australia. She always jokes that she wants to go back and visit but it's too far to swim.

I always thought from how she talked about Perth that it was a small town in the middle of nowhere. When I looked it up I was surprised it is the capital of the region. Then I found this fun tidbit that explained it all.
"Perth is one of the most isolated major cities in the world. The nearest city with a population of more than 100,000 is Adelaide, 2,104 kilometres (1,307 mi) away. Only Honolulu (population 953,000), 3,841 kilometres (2,387 mi) from San Francisco, is more isolated."

I would like a free live cover to YuleBeAWinner in February. 2358 is my ID but I don't think you'll need it.

  • Breezey we have several pink, red, green and other colored lakes here. Usually it's because of an algae that lives in them!
  • Rits--blueys are awesome little animals. They are common in back yards here in Brissie and are often also kept as pets. One of my favorite native reptiles.
  • Jailee--where are you from? We are hanging out with the dogs and listening to the Hottest 100. Also, Starry Knights is in house only..can you pick someone else please?
  • Salvistar--Perth is amazing! I loved my trip there and would go back in a heartbeat. The port at Perth is actually at Freemantle, which is closer to the ocean but prone to flooding and without a good fresh water source so the original settlers moved to Perth. Now Freeo is full of hipsters and boutique beer breweries. My parents came down a few years ago and we did the west coast together and I cherish my memories of Dad sitting at the Little Creatures brewery with me talking about the world and sipping excellent craft beer.
  • Can't forget the cool animals. Not just the reptile, though I'm partial to those, sugar gliders too and kola's
  • Hi Cheers i Live in Rockingham Perth Western Australia. All the photos are from a week long trip we did in September 2015 , the top 3 are Cape le Grande National park in Esperance wa, the next one is Coleminers beach caravan park Norbalup Inlet near Warpole WA the next one is the super pit in Kalgoorlie WA and the last one is on the road from Noresman to Esperance . would love a straw from Brindled Bandit id is 5309
    Thanked by 1Cheers
  • Dang, you guys already mentioned the camels! Australia has the highest wild population of camels in the world, even though they aren't native :).
A different fact is that wombats poo is square shaped. They are also really big! So much bigger than I imagined.
I'd love a straw to Weekend Wishes (who would have guessed ;) ) My ID is 3077.

Also, did you guys hear about the leucistic great white shark (assumed) that was found in NSW? I thought it was pretty neat!
    Thanked by 1Cheers
  • Not sure if this counts, but my friend who lives in Australia has a friend that had a cockroach sneak up her nose at night! She felt something and when to go look, but saw nothing. But then the next day, she sneezed and there was a cockroach in her tissue! Sounds absurd right?

I would like to breed my black foundation mare to Starry Knights http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=299595 :)
    Have a nyce day!
  • Omg nyc, that's horrible! Cockroaches are a huge problem in my house as well, and now I have a new fear!
  • Rhythm--cubic poo is the weirdest thing... Did you know wombats are also the closest relative of the koala? They both have backward opening pouches. Wombats also have a bony plate in their butt that the use to crush the heads of predators against the tops of their burrows to convince them to go looking for easier prey.

I hadn't heard about the white white shark pup. Poor little one...our shark policies down here are s bit backward. Oh well...
  • NYC I'm considering making you pick a new fact. Either way you need to pick another stallion as Starry Knights is in house only.
  • oops again. I should learn to not get so excited and post everything in the first comment lol. A straw please :) I'm loving all these facts about Australia! I've always wanted to go there. And I really hope to one day. Its such a magical looking place
  • Already sent Moon!
  • That's really creepy about their butt! I had no idea.

Fact 2: Woolies will run out of sausages on Straya day so make sure to stock up before hand. Guess chicken will have to do since Boyfriend refuses to get kangaroo :p. The 'more Australian' argument didn't fly.
  • We are having lamb sausages! But I got them s few weeks ago and froze them...everything lamb gets soooo expensive right close to Aus Day!
