Drafts and Warmbloods and Cobs...Oh My!
-
Ok...I get the basics on sizes....Warmbloods are medium, Drafts are large, Lights are, well, smaller and light but still horse tall, sport ponies are short, cobs are short and thick. Do you select Heavy and Pony to get cobs? and are Medium/Pony sports ponies? What are Light/ponies? What constitutes a Riding horse?
-
Sport ponies are warmblood ponies, cobs are draft ponies, and riding ponies are, well, riding horses that are pony-sized. :P
Riding horses are the light-boned horses, and warmbloods are medium, and drafts are heavies. :)Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms -
I kind of thought that was it, but wanted to be sure!
Thanks again, Rose! -

OH! I hadn't noticed the difference between the Riding horse and Riding pony pictures! Duh! (I do have to say that I chose to breed medium horses over the others, so I wasn't looking terribly closely at the pictures!). What's a Warmblood Draft cross?
-
And; My compliments, Ammit, you've figured out how to get all the different types/breeds without indicating specific breeds. I know it was a thing on WHG about the breeds competing against themselves and each other. You really have resolved it very nicely!

Crosses between any bone "thickness" produce one or the other in offspring. There is a thread somewhere where we tried to figure out what the cutoff was for each class, just after the new art was introduced. That's why if you go to the profile page for your horse it gives you a number beside the Bone, a bit like giving you the height of your horse....crossing a "lighter" Draft horse with a Warmblood will be more likely to give you Warmbloods and so on. Ammit issued a challenge on Facebook when the new art came out for someone to breed up from light horses to heavies or down from heavies to riding horses and see how many generations it would take.Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms

The crosses between sizes (bone sizes) has been simplified so that if you breed horses of different sizes, say a Draft and a Warmblood, a number generated from each parent's bone size number will be sorted into either the Warmblood part of the bone size spectrum or the Draft side. We know what each horse's bone size number is, but we don't know how the foal's number is generated yet. :)
Riding horses are from 0 to 1.49, Warmbloods are from 1.50 to 2.49, and Drafts are from 2.50 to probably 4. We haven't gotten to either extreme yet, so I don't really know what happens when you get get to them. :P
I hope that's clear. :PThanked by 1ConfluenceFarms -
Again, makes sense. Is there a name for Warmblood/Draft crosses?
-
Nope, they're either warmblood or Draft. :P You could start a line of horses right on the edge and give them a tattoo, though. :P
-
Well, all the other crosses/mixes have their own terms....I think Big Ole Honkin' horses should be a thing! or Drambloods....or Warfts.
-
Now I'm having visions of horses with Klingon foreheads....(Warfts)!
-
I'm really chuckling over that, being a huge Star Trek fan.De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."
