Questions about coloring???
  • why is this horse a black appy but the next horse (that to me looks like the same base color) is colored a grullo??
    Black Appy: http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=337993
    Grullo: http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=366298

Is it all about the dorsal stripe down the back and the dark muzzle?? Thanks for the clarification! I know to be a grullo a black horse has to have the dun gene but why is the black appy not exactly black?
  • It's the pearl. It lightens the black and makes it look like a Grullo color.
  • Yes! The dorsal stripe and dark muzzle are markers of the dun gene, which slightly diluted the black pigment. :)
The appy gene does a thing called bronzing, which could be it, but she also has a copy of pearl, which dilutes a little bit on its own and a lot more when combined with a copy of cream or another pearl. :D

  • I'd agree it's the combination of Pearl and appy bronzing. A single copy of Pearl often has a very very delicate effect, but I'm guessing the bronze is enhancing it!

  • Cool. I figured it had something to do with the pearl gene but i had no idea about the appy bronzing. :) thank you for the explanation!!
