Culling the Bootstrap mares
-
I've come to the point where i'm getting to many blues to keep all of them, but i don't have enough golds to cull all of the blues either. So i need to come up with another thing to cull my bootstrap mares on.
Next season, i'll have nearly 200 BS mares to breed, which means I'll have to pull an extra Star boy from my surplus stud barn to cover everyone. Or i can cull about 50 blues.
I haven't culled on anything but paper level up until now, so i know i probably have quite a few inconsistent. And i haven't culled by color, either. Eventually my plan is to mix my even lines with my bootstrap lines, whenever I start getting more even gold/ star. It'll be a while on that though. So i'm not sure where i should start culling.
Here's a rundown of my mares and fillies:
Mares 4+: 147
16 Gold
131 Blue
Filly 3yo: 44
5 Gold
39 Blue
Filly 2yo: 59
4 Gold
55 Blue
Filly 1yo: 47
11 Gold
37 Blue#28036 -
If I were you I'd start culling the blues on consistency. Inconsistent horses are more likely to throw inconsistent foals. It also lowers the pt a bit. Since the main aim of a bootstrap herd is to produce high pted show ponies, having them be consistent can helpProducer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

I just did that and it still leaves me with 167 mares for next season. :-))#28036

Whelp, that's a start at least lol!
If you can't be bothered calculating AFPT, you could always next cull for a colour that you love. If it's common enough in your herd that most are at least het, you could always cull the ones without it, or those not hom for it.Producer of Volcanic Glass Drafts. Lapisobsidianus.

I would calculate AFPT and cull enough of the bottom blue producers to fit the next years mares in and continue to cull the lowest each year until your golds full up.
When gold is the majority cull the blues and start culling the lowest AFPT Gold mares to fit the next seasons in.
ETA: also you may want to run BA or SBA on the blues for an easier cull if you haven’t already -
I breed for flashy ponies, not always just high PT, so instead of culling on inconsistency I usually cull on flashiness. I have several genes I love - satin, pearl, white spotting - so when I get a foal with only one of those, or het of only two, or otherwise plain, it'll often get culled. Golds get more leeway, and the blues have to be a lot prettier to stay, but I've culled a gold or two before as well.
I also look at parents, which helps - if I get a blue out of a gold, that's an instant snip. If I get a blue out of a blue, they sometimes get to stay (though that have to be extra shiny compared to the dam), and the next foal has to be a gold (so blue out of blue out of blue will go unless they're very, very flashy).
One other way I cull established mares that have had multiple foals is to pull up the foals and look at both AFPT and average papering - while I know it's technically the RNG on that one, if the blue mare has only thrown blues and A's (four or five times) when paired with a star, it's possible she's a lower blue and so I'll often cull her.ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!

The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time. -
I'm not getting enough colts passing BA to try that on the blue mares. It'd cut me down way way yoo much. I've culled a few on AFPT, but if i have 40-50 incoming mares, that's to many good producing blues to cut to replace with potentially mediocre ones. I think i'll try to cull on color... or maybe start weeding out the satin...#28036

I’ll take any blue mares you want to sell! Inconsistent doesn’t bother me in the slightest. Unique colors are good though... I love satin. But my boys are pretty crazy colored so I could take plains too.
I agree with everyone else on AFPT (If they’ve been consistently bred to similar quality stallions though. I couldn’t do this because sometime I let my foundation or 2G stallions cover, then sometimes my mid Stars.) (edit: nvmd looks like you just commented on that)
Do you prefer a certain weight/height? Any colors that aren’t your favorite?Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses. -
I have all sizes and body types, but i am workingon breeding more draft/cob and riding pony/horse, less warmblood/sport pony across all of my lines. I'm not in a good placefor a major overhaul on body tyle in my BS herd until i can get another heavy and light studs. I don't like satin, and that is rampant in my bootstrap lines. So I'm going to start culling for that, starting with anything homozygous. Hopefully soon i can get superior colts without satin alleles to replace the ones with satin. That'll help immensely with that.
@HunterUnderSaddleGirl
All the horses currently in my primary barn are ones I've pulledfrom my breeders/keepers. Let me know if you're interested in any of them. There are some very pretty girls in there. Otherwise, the ones with decent points will go to the show herd and the ones with few points will go to auction.#28036 -
How much for all of them?Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.
-
I'm going to keep a few of the high pointed ones for show, but I'll take 2500 each for anything under 200 points and 3500 each for the rest, minus the few I'm keeping for show. I just added a bunch of consistents, some hom satin and the rest het satin, and I'll be adding 18 2yr olds and 5 yearlings soon.#28036

Sounds good to me! Do you have a buddy chat we can use?Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

Yup, i'll add you shortly and start adding horses. It might take a couple days to get all of them. :D#28036

That’s fine with me. I’ve halfway saved up for a 210 stall barn and j still have a few horses to send to my SSBreeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

One other thing that just occured to me as I was working on my own for this season - culling on AFPT can sometimes work to weed out inconsistent ones on the side, as inconsistency lowers the PT of the foal by a little bit. As I said, I'm not purposefully culling on inconsistency (or even 100% on AFPT) but as I sort by AFPT and sort from the back forward, I'm culling a few more inconsistent mares than consistent ones.ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!
