Consistency?
  • I've been culling very strictly for consistency since I started. I only breed consistent horses, with maybe one exception in my herd of mares.

How important do you guys feel consistency is? Is it hereditary? Do you feel it has a big impact on the quality of the offspring from that horse?
  • With the show system as it is now I don’t believe consistency is as important as it used to when the shows were much more expensive and less profitable. Then when you entered a horse you wanted to be sure that your horse would at least place high enough to earn its entry fee back. (Top half of the class I think)

Consistency testing was one of the first forms of testing available to us to tell the quality of our horses.

Consistency is hereditary and your more likely to get consistent horses from consistent horses (you’ll still get inconsistent horses from consistent ones)

That being said I have a big enough barn that inconsistent horses don’t negatively impact me and it’s a good way to quickly thin my herd down so I only keep consistent breeding stock and no longer auction off all my inconsistent show horses.
  • I nearly always gmt my stallions to consistent if they are inconsistent, but otherwise I don't worry too much about consistencey. I keep and breed inconsistent mares
  • Like kintara, my stallions are consistent and if I like my inconsistent mares in all other ways I keep them and breed them. Inconsistency in show horses doesn't matter as long as the PT is over 9.9 I keep them. Inconsistency lowers the PT score (when you GMT them consistent it can shoot up quite a bit) and so your AFPT will possibly be lower if they breed a lot inconsistent horses.
Lots of people use it as a way to cull their breeding stock if they have too many.

  • I am pretty ruthless on consistency in my breeding stock, but I have no issues with inconsistency in my show herd. Most inconsistent mares are spayed unless they have special genes that make them worth GMTing to consistent. Stallions will be comparison tested to my current bench marks, if they are equal or better and inconsistent I will probably GMT them consistent, otherwise they are gelded. The occasional horse has slipped through and remained inconsistent, but that is rare.
  • I’m on the extreme opposite end of the spectrum as everyone. I don’t even look at consisitency. In fact I don’t even performance test my breeding stock. Personal preference. My thinking is I believe BA/SBA already look some at consistency. And I know on show foals it will bring down the PT. That brings down the AFPT of the parents, so again when I cull by AFPT it’s already somewhat automatically culled. With that being said I almost like inconsistency sometimes. It feels like when the horse is abnormally high then it more than enough makes up for abnormally low times. If also prevents a horse from being stuck in a bad place when the level out. Not sure if my theories are true or if I’m just lazy, or have too many inconsistent horses I would be sad to cull.
Breeder of any and all crazy colored drafts and RH horses.

  • It is definitely hereditary although there is a random factor too. Consistent horses seem to go for more money as there is a higher demand for them :)
I use it as a culling thing for foundations or red mares but once they are blue or gold I am not bothered anymore.
