I'm struggling again
-
I just have so many and dont have enough pastures. I really need to cut my 1k+ herd back down to 500 but the chose is so difficult. It's to the point I just breed my 3 foundation lines and dont do anything else with the gens after. Running out of motavation----

I’m having similar problems. I’m going through my herd this month and removing everyone from pasture, renaming and resorting, and if they are not part of one of my chosen 3 foundations, they get the snip or public brood. I will be using one pasture to rotate in my foundations, one week per line, and my other pastures for my second gens in each line. Then at the end, what didn’t get bred that was up for public brood gets thrown in the cleared foundation pasture and bred for show ponies. I had to take a break last month for a few days because I was getting overwhelmed.
-
That's a good idea! I think I'll get a side barn to empty my pastures...in a need a big barn
I've used the pasture rotation but it can be a nightmare dealing with so much sorting. Though I think with a little clever naming it could be simplified. Missing the pasture bonus is a problem too. I used to breed one round immediately remove and replxe then either 3 weeks later (right before rollover) breed the new one or wait till next season and repeat. That worked really well----

To help with the sorting, I at least run BA or SBA while in pasture, and then name the ones that pass. Then I can immediately put the gelds in a show barn and deal with them later when I pull them from pasture.

I find when I am feeling overwhelmed I need to take a step back. Skip a season so I can figure out what I need to change to make it better.
If your a list maker/ note taker write down what you are struggling with, what do you want to breed for, what will make you happy? What are your goals?
Try to narrow it down as much as you can. I’ve gone through this time after time and find I reinvigorate mysekf when I refocus my goals and go through my herd to make it move in the direction I want it to go. I need to do this on hj2 but this week I’ve been working on hj1.
The last time I took a hard look at my herd my list came out like this:
Overwhelmed with show horses -> put a cap on show horse stalls, sell off aged homebred horses 12-15 years old
How much money does one need? My daily bonus paid for all of my breeding and testing fees in 1 day -> selling showhorses will decrease my show bonus to a more reasonable, spendable number. -> Increasing my foundation mare herd will increase my creating, breeding and testing fees and use up all the money I’d already saved up.
Not overly excited about my breeding herd -> increase herd to increase chances of being excited about breeding -> revive my project lines and bring new life to them. -> draw attention to the “special” horses. Make them stand out on the list so that even without seeing them I know they’re special. I made sure I went through and marked all of my ice, Satin, homo and het KP and nexus horses names. I then made sure I organized and named my pastures so that they were grouped together and from the name I’d know what was in there. The other horses became filler horses to increase numbers.
Since then I’ve had vast improvements of my number of breeding horses 2-5 gens and don’t feel so overwhelmed. I’m also down over 100k/day show bonus and feel less overwhelmedThanked by 1GeneverGinger -
Also with sorting I have a checklist I follow and do as much sorting and culling from the main barn pages as possible so that I don’t get all attached and want to keep foals untested because they’re pretty.
If you don’t do certain tests now may be the time to run them to narrow down the herd -
One of my little tips is to “rubber duck” your problems. Talk to something, anything, out loud. Rubber ducks are cute and work very well, lol, but stuffed animals or pets or even a favorite picture on the wall work too. Vocalizing your sorting problems is usually really helpful in calming down and focusing on one thing at a time, rather than moving at the speed of thought (which tries to answer ten problems at once).
I use my non-horsey but very good friend as my rubber duck. She’ll feign interest long enough for me to talk over all my sorting problems, and as I talk I start answering my own questions, and by the time I’m done talking I usually will have had at least two or three “aha” moments that make my barns look prettier afterwards.ISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!
God grant me the hbs to buy the ponies I need,
The fortitude to resist the shiny ones I truly don't,
And the wisdom to know there will always be more next time. -
It would almost be nice to have a discord chat to do that with like-minded people. Not for text chat - that's what the FB, buddy chats, and forum are for, but for a quick "hey Lally, I need someone to talk this over with, can you help?" voice chat type deal :))

That would be fun! I don’t know what Ammit would think of an “official” discord, but I personally wouldn’t mind at least exchanging info via PMs :DISO any and all Silver Pocket Watches!

Thank you all so much for the helpful tips! This is why I love this place so much!
I am a list taker. I used to manage my herd entirely from lists. I haven't done that since giving birth to my son because my herd nearly tripled in size!
I'll go back o that method and start cutting down the problems!
@Lallyhop that's a great idea! Usually I use my partner as my rubber duck and just tall about what I need done with my herd until I solve the problem myself. He doesnt understand the genetics but he knows how much they mean to me and is great at letting me tall it out.----
