What is Dp?
  • Still learning.
  • Dense pheomelanin. It darkens/reddens the horses coat. Light chestnuts become deeper colored chestnuts, light bays become redder bays.

It is one of the genes needed to make liver chestnut/chocolate palamino.

  • Nice! Can you tell on genetic line?
  • DP is an untestable gene, like Gulastra Plume, Snowflake, and Kit Promoter. You can only tell if horses carry DP by the color changes on their coat, or if the horse is chestnut or palomino because their name changes to liver chestnut and chocolate Palomino. There need to be at least 3 of 4 genes (2 copies of Sooty/Sooty+ and 1 copy DP or 1 copy Sooty/Sooty + and 2 copies DP) for that to happen.
Any horse can carry DP, even black based horses. It’s just harder to tell on black based horses. Red based champagne and cremello horses can carry DP, they just do not get a name change.
