I thought I had passed this phase..
-
So I got this foal a few seasons ago..
KAMs Love On Burr
And wanted to try for one that was unaltered..
So I bred these two..
Blanca Burr WSGRABr NP
Love On Ice WSBISF ToT
And got a lethal foal. Was I really lucky then? Or really unlucky this go round? What are the odds of it happening again?
I always think I am safe-ish.. and one comes along..
It really hurt, but I really loved the first foal! :((Breeder of Quality Warmbloods and Show Horses

Homozygous w2 seems to always be lethal. It's happened to me a couple times, too. :(
Edit to fix that smiley and actually answer your question. lol Since both are het for w2, you've got a one in four chance that you'll get a lethal.Justa ~ ID# 44842

Homozygous W2 isn't always lethal. None of the kit genes are. As a matter of fact hom W2 is actually a moderate risk, as is W2 and SB1. I think anything of a medium WF or higher can result in a lethal foal. If the foal got the frame, that could push the WF up more than usual.

... So I just have abysmal luck with white factors on w2 horses, I guess. lol I thought that was what gave me the lethals I've had, so I've been avoiding crossing them again. :\">Justa ~ ID# 44842

@KAM I think you just got really unlucky. I’d try again next season.
@JustaSaddletramp one thing to think about is the whiter the horses you cross, (not the lighter, but the more white markings, Appaloosa being the exception to the rule), the more dangerous the cross is. So markings like W1, W2, W10 tend to make a horse quite white as does Sabino with a high white factor. So if you want to cross those patterns, just look for horses with lots of color and not very much white. It’s never 100% safe, but it’s safer! -
Thanks, @Cheers, I'll remember! That explains the lethal foal I got from my liver stallion with kitM, tobiano, splash, and splash 2 when I crossed him to a mare with sb1 and w2, which I thought were safer white genes.

The stud has a medium white factor, but the mare's was extensive. I had thought it was just crossing too many white genes on one foal that was the problem. I mostly breed him to solid, tobiano, or kitM mares now. lolJusta ~ ID# 44842

Yep, adding Splash or Frame to a moderately risky cross and then adding extensive White factor too...I love my flashy pattern combos but it sounds like that foal got too many of the dangerous genes combined...doesn’t mean you can’t try again, but I’d definitely be looking for low White factor mares for that lovely boy.Thanked by 1JustaSaddletramp

Mostly I've used him to bootstrap up a couple pretty show ponies. I love the sooty and kitM combinations he throws, though sometimes I could do with a lot less splash. lol
