Can we cross drafts and cobs?

    Oh dear - I just figured out that cobs are heavy boned ponies. Is there a penalty for consistency when crossing ponies and horses? If not - is there a benefit to sticking with one or the other?

    There is no penalty for crossing horses. Be they riding horses to cobs, father to daughter, anything.

    The only thing you need to watch out for is frame, splash 2, splash 3, and the lethal kit combos. Apart from that, go nuts.

    Ammit once mentioned a challenge to anyone who wanted to start with Riding Horses or Ponies and breed up to Drafts. You could go in the other direction as well.

    These cross-size breedings happen in real life, on purpose (European draft breeds crossed with Thoroughbreds and Arabians to get the Warmblood sport horses) or accidentally. The therapeutic horseback riding program I volunteer with once had a lovely bay tobiano pony. We were told that his dam was a Tennessee Walking horse and his sire was a miniature horse. It was a puzzle we never solved about how that cross came about. :D

    @sandycreekfarm - I never knew of a challenge to breed RH up to drafts....oh yeah!!! I'm totally going to do this now. this is exciting.
