Why do they look so different?
  • I just bred two foals out of the same stallion and two blue roan mares with virtually identical genetics. The ended up with pretty similar genes, but fairly different appearances. Is it just chance or is there a reason they look so different?

  • Tobiano markings: Tobiano is a white gene and so it's expression is dependent on the horses WF, or white factor. The one with more tobiano marking has a large WF, while the other has a light WF.

Roaning or Dapples: Honestly, this is just a variation of expression. Sometimes roan can be almost hidden, as it is on the top horse. Silver can give dapples, but only sometimes. So one foal got the dapple expression, and the other got the roan expression. If you want to change this you can always reroll the photo under IV shopping for 100hbs.

  • Thank you! I know that some genes have varied expression, but I'm still not sure which ones those are and how they change. That makes sense, though!

  • There is actually quite a variance with silver, especially in blacks. You can get dapples, or a flat coat. It also lightens up blacks to varying degrees and, if you look at the muzzle of the bottom one, you can see that it is kind of brown, which is also applicable to silver blacks. It's a lovely pattern to be breeding for though, silver black roan. There is a buddy chat room dedicated to the colour if you want to breed for it.

  • To the best of my knowledge, after playing this game (starting with HaJ 1) since 2011, the current state of the game is that there is a range of possible results for most colors or patterns. Just as in real life, there are very few exactly identical horses.

  • Also from what I understand the tabiano gene in real horses causes a chemical wash during the foals development and that is what would create the pattern itself so it would be random.
