Pasture Mares
-
I know that if you leave a mare in a pasture, she accrues a breeding bonus, somehow. Does the bonus only apply to pasture breeding, or would a live cover or straw also use her bonus?
-
What if you cover her to a stallion that's not in the pasture? I would check, but it being non-breeding season might affect that.
-
Mares that are in a pasture can only be bred by a stallion in the same pasture. If you want to breed her to another stallion or use a straw, you must take her out of the pasture to do it. This negates any breeding bonus she might have built up and resets her to her full basic range of offspring quality. If you return her to the pasture after breeding, her count of days for the bonus resets to 0.
This is how I understand the bonus works. Every horse has a given range of offspring that it can produce. Whenever two horses are bred together, the breeding program produces a random number from the ranges of the mare and stallion and assigns it to the foal. As the mare remains in the pasture, the lower end of her range is increasingly ignored each day, up to a point, so that her contribution to the foal's abilities comes more and more from the top of her range.
The bonus does not make her a "better" breeder by raising the top end of her range, it just causes her foals to fall on the higher end of the possibilities more often.
De gustibus non disputandum. "There's no arguing about tastes."

Righto, just checking. :P
Ooh, I haven't heard it explained like that before. That's good. :D

If you put a mare or stallion to pasture can u still show them?
-
This I know: they can't be shown, but they will Train. Stallions don't accrue any bonus while they're in a pasture, so you can take them out and show them. :D

Any show points that are held by horses in the pasture do still count toward your weekly bonus.I was jllewis on the old forum.
