Lethal Genes and GMT Lab
-
I know some genes are lethal when homozygous (infamous frame and splash 2 being two of my favorites that are lethal homozygous). But, if it is lethal when homozygous, how are we able to make a create foundation horse have these genes homozygously? For example, my favorite foundation stud right now, Freaky Dreamer, was GMT’d to be homozygous Splash 2. Is this similar to the reason we can have the Freaky Friday horses with homozygous frame, that since it is a create horse we can do things that would normally create a lethal foal? Or is there a secondary factor, like the WF, that allowed the homozygous splash 2 that I just completely overlooked? I will link my example, Freaky Dreamer.

They are lethal because the foal can not properly develop. That is not the same as genetically altering a functional adult animal to only pass on a certain allele.

Thank you Ammit, I figured it was something like that. I just wanted to be sure before I did any major alterations.
