GMT genes
  • What are Kit Promoter and Gulastra Plume genes? And how do they work? Like if I were to put them on a horse that didn't have those genes would I be able to put them on? Would I need to do it twice to get the gene to show if I could put it on without a recessive gene?
  • KP gives the horse a 'clouded' look, as if you took a huge Roan paintbrush and swiped at them randomly. I think it needs two KIT genes present to be expressed.

Gulastra Plume turns the tail silvery/white. It usually leaves the mane dark. You see a pretty similar look in some Splash horses that have a white patch on the tail, but GP is its own thing.

No idea on GMT, I seem to remember reading that to add a gene, it needs to be a possibility from that breeding that the particular horse just didn't get.

  • Gulastra Plume (GP) and Kit Promoter (KP) are hidden genes that can be GMTed on foundations. They do not appear on here helpers. GP causes an ombre effect on the tail of Bay based horses, and must be homozygous to show. KP causes a cloudy effect on horses with two kit genes (tobiano, sabino, white, roan) and must be homozygous to show.

  • I think that's how it works with other genes but I'm not sure an out these two. You can't search for the genes so I'm not sure.
RipshinCreekFarm: does that mean I need to buy two copies per foundation?
  • I'm more interested in KP but I figured I'd ask about both!
  • It depends if the horse in question is lined or a foundation. If the horse is foundation (having no game horses in its pedigree), any genes can be added. If the horse is lined, their can only be changed to whatever their parents had. Say a lined horse had KitKitr. If you wanted to add another kit gene or remove the roan, you'd only be able to choose from the parents' genes, so you could only change the sire's trait to whatever else he had, and you could only remove the roan if the dam's other kit allele wasn't roan. On the bright side, gene alterations only cost 1 GMT whatever the gene in lined horses.

  • Kit Promoter has technically 2 separate genes, your kit genes that you can see in a genetic test and then a hidden gene that must be homozygous to show on the coat and register in the breeders club. Just because A horse has two kit genes does not automatically make it a Kit Promoter.

  • for KP and GP specifically you'd need two of each gene for it to express, but KP does need two Kit genes (even if they're just w20) and for GP you need a bay base. It won't show on chestnuts or blacks.

  • Yes, each foundation needs two copies to show. In addition, KP needs two regular kit genes. GP needs to be bay. One way you can search for hidden genes is by searching with with breeders club field. Since only horses with two copies can be entered in their respective clubs for kit promoter and gulastra plum, it will show horses that homozygous for that gene. You can see a lot of different examples.

  • Awesome! Thank you RoseFlute! That's what I was trying to find out. So it would be say two copies of sabino or tobiano to be able to show, then I would need to add KP twice through GMT. Did I understand that right?
  • You guys are to fast for me today! Thank you all so much for the help!
  • Yup! but keep in mind, when you go to breed him, make sure the mares don't have potentially lethal combinations. Foundations can be fine with combinations of w1 and s1 with high white factors, but their foals are not impervious to the danger in the combinations. Tobiano should be fine, but it has the chance of obscuring the KP clouds.

  • Is sabino 1 one of the genes I have to be careful with? That's what I was going to use but I'll look for another job lethal kit gene if it is :)
  • You can totally still go for sabino, just be careful who you breed them with. :)
  • It looks like, from the chart I found that sabino is safe with sabino but can be lethal with W, W2,, and W3?
  • Yes, the white can cause a white factor of over 100%, which is lethal.

  • Don't forget, too, that after you fork over all the big bucks for the KP gene, if you don't like the way it looks on your horse you can ALWAYS re-roll the picture and get a different placement of the 'cloud'.

  • Thank you Confluence! It's gonna take awhile to get up the funds but I'll get there!
