Sorting and naming
-
I’m trying to get through my foundries kicked out of pasture, 1 year olds and 2 year olds to decide who goes and who gets named and boy is it ever a big job I feel for those of you with thousands of horses. I’m wondering if it’s worth it as I may just dump most of my horses and start over with a very nice stud think candy apploosa with S+ and maybe a few other fun genes

I think every one of us "big barns" have a very neat and efficient way of sorting through foals. I do the same routine every season, and alter ALOT of foals.Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms

Yep. My barns here aren’t as big as on HJ1 but it doesn’t take me too long to sort through my foals and breeding horses. I absolutely *love* the bulk testing buttons. Naming in the other hand sucks lol though other than a bunch of new foundations I’ve just finished naming all my HJ1 breeding horses. Just need to start on my HJ2 ones now.
For sorting I check mark all the horses in a barn and alter all the inconsistent, non-grullo horses and run every one through strict breeding so that I’m not getting hung up on a pretty picture. By the time I’ve done all the testing I usually have only a handful of intact horses for each generation and they get sorted to their appropriate barns. Then I go through my breeding barns and if a higher paper level is starting to take over majority I alter all the lower papers.
The rest get put into show barns. Although I’m starting to go through all my show horses and mark all the Home bred ones for my “Double or Nothing” show bonus post. -
I think something that helps the big barns is that since it took so long for us to build up to this volume, we learned our tastes and got very specific and raised our standards for keepers. This way we're less attached to every foal that comes through and it's less hard for us to alter unnecessary foals. :) What's helping me cu down on numbers right now is just picking out the cream of the crop and chucking everyone else.Thanked by 1ConfluenceFarms

I had to quit naming show ponies. Just too many!
-
Lol cheers I hear ya. My bandit1119 show horses get Z added to their name so they drop to the bottom of any drop down lists so I don’t have to dig through to find my breeders
-
This is the reason why for even breeding I go for the highest stud I can find of that generation, so I can breed 200+ mares, ba all the foals get roughly 12 intact fillies total for the year, pick high colts with the genes I want, and then I am done. See how many stalls I have for show pony foals that year and auction all the spelled foals with pt below the level that will give me the number of foals above that I want.Thanked by 1KintaraContest

I usually name horses over coffee in the morning when big decisions shouldnt be made. The horses with out names go to the auction house. Its easier to toss the un named into auction cuz they are at the top of the list. Course now that I have a paid account I'm really loving the enter the barn into auction button. I keep an empty barn just for auction horses. All of my RS horses start with RS so they are together in the list. All of my Except Perf horses start with EP and all of the exceptional breeders are XP. Course Perfect founds are PF. Everyone else tends to start with an S. The S is for passed BA. The Ss stands for passed SBA. These are all of the younger horses. Some of the older ones start with Skylight. I Realized that with the Name and the color codes and the Gen Skylight was too long so I started just using S.
