Any name generators?
-
I know a lot of you have super cool horse names, but I’m wondering where you get them! Anyone have any name generators? Or naming techniques?Home of the Valley Warmbloods.

I really like this name generator.

I also use the Goodreads listopia to name my horses after book titles. A lot of them are pretty and make good names. -
Here are some I use regularly.

I don't always name my ponies something like a name, but when I do, I use Corona. I mean, um, I find some way to combine aspects of the sire and dam's names, preferably recognizably, so that I can remember their parentage and even general color scheme when I see their name in a drop-down list. :)
Otherwise I put the sire's name first, and part of the dam's name after, uncreatively, like Mott Knocks' and Monday Magic's foals would be MottMon, MottMagic, Mottday, whatever. A more creative one might be NoMaj. Or KnoMaj... -
I get my names from both the stallion and the mare. I use a theme too, example my RH have Texas in their, my WBH have Groovy and my Drafts have Dream. This is have I come up with names for my foals.

Sports Illustratred has one:

And here is one where you can enter sex and sire and dams names and it will give you a name based on that, though I really havent used it:

Although, quite honestly, my show horse names come from random things - an object I saw laying around, or a phrase I heard on the TV. I do put a little more thought in the breeding stock.
-
Research! A lot of times I go to the wikipedia page of the sire and try to find something that links him to the mare, and also describes the foal. So stallion Chardonnay and mare Country Wine made baby Bubbly Moscato!
It's kinda a lot of effort but naming is one of my favorite things to do in the game. :) -
Things I have previously used to name horses:
My list of things to do
My grocery list
The last phrase I heard on TV
Book/movie characters
Book titles I can see from where I am
Chapter titles, Harry Potter novels
Anatomical terms during study
Medical terms during study
Diagnoses from that day’s clinics (there used to be a horse running around named Flea Allergy Dermatitis)
Everything I can see around me that is the color red
Fruits
Vegetables
Recipe titles in a cook book
Songs/albums/artists when listening to my music on random
Names of cars
Packing list
Horses I used to know
Sky deities
Weather deities
Historical figures
Wiki searches for particular fandoms
Scientific names for animals/plants
I previously had a line from the foundation stallion Uluru Reflections. Many of his offspring were named from an aboriginal language dictionary I found online.
I also use a Tolkien elvish dictionary online to name horses from my Lord Celeborn line.
I have quit naming my show ponies. There are just too many.
My lined horses are mostly some combination of their parents’ names, or something that popped into my head while considering their parents’ names that may be slightly (or seriously depending on how random Im being that day) tangential. Naming foundation mares is probably what tests my creative abilities most. A lot of them get book titles for names. -
I get really bored of combo names from parents. Each year I usually have a theme. I think for my proper, organized breeding seasons, I've done
Types of wine
Game of Thrones characters
Cocktails
Types of bird
Next season I think I'll do capital cities :) -
I love the themes!! Thanks everyone I’ve got a lot of ideas :DHome of the Valley Warmbloods.

I started with using part of the sire's and dam's names. But used up all the possibilities.
So now I do the same as Cheers lists.
Or part of a song or TV show I happen to be listening to.
I also write down good things I see while driving somewhere, after I stop of course... :D
Some of my horse's names now are from part of a billboard or a sign on the side of a truck or building. -
I use a lot of song titles. I also will do combinations of the sire and dam sometimes. Or random stuff that's going on around me when I'm naming one. I also will pull names from video games :)
