Roan and Aging?
-
I apologize in advance if this is a thread better suited for the genetics category. My question is geared towards the game rather than horse genetics in general.

I have noticed as this boy ages he seems to get paler. Maybe I remembering incorrectly (and I have no screenshots) but it seems like his coat has gotten significantly lighter each game year. Do roans get additional lightness to their coats with age in the game similar to how grays lighten with age or am I imagining things?Red Rock Ranch

Yes. This happens with roans and some apps. In fact I think that his appaloosa varnish may be playing a bigger role in his lightening than the roan. I love getting the surprise butt spots on my horses when that happens.Be not afraid to ask questions. You're not the only idiot in the room.

Roan can be rerolled to different shades of lightness, but what you're seeing is the varnishing that comes with Appy. :)Thanked by 1RedRockRanch

I totally forgot about varnishing with appies. I haven't bred them (intentionally that is) until recently. Thank you both!Red Rock Ranch

Wow ObsidianKitsune!! That's incredible! So do all appaloosas varnish as they age and do most of them eventually end up almost white?Red Rock Ranch

Most eventually end up white I believe, however there are a few that don't. I have a 16 year old black appy mare, just 1 year younger than this one, who is still mostly black. I think I remember Ammit saying something along the lines of varnishing at a later age can be bred for, but I don't mind the white that it gives.
Here's that girl that I mentioned. You can see that she does have varnish, it's just no where near as advanced as my other one:
